I'm just drinking my first cuppa of the day, in silence, in my kitchen spot. The cats have been fed but only girl cat came for breakfast...I haven't seen boy cat since he jumped out of bed at 7:30 🤷‍♀️.

Neither of the girls is up, despite having been warned a roofer and sparky are expected at ten, to sort the extractor fan. Unfortunately for them, this company have been very punctual in the past!

Today's plan is to veeeerrrrryyyy sssssllllooooowwwwlllllyyy de-Christmas the house. I'm still recovering from the flu so it'll be slow and steady & if it takes the day, so be it. Once that's done, I'd like to get the paints out, but don't think I have it in me <sigh>.

Dd2 has decided to learn to crochet so that and last bits of homework are her main plan for the day. And dd1 has an assignment due on Monday to finish off.

I have no idea what's for tea tonight. Something quick and easy, followed by a couple of hours reading, and another early night I think 💤.

What about all of you? 🙂

I dropped DD to work for 8.30 and headed to Tesco, to do my usual weekly shop. Bitterly cold this morning (-2 degrees), but it's a beautiful, sunny, wintry day. The fishmonger was closed, so I had to do a bit of a detour to buy some fish. I've a long list of household tasks to do today, but I'm taking a 20 minute break for a cuppa to heat myself up.

I need to pop down to the pharmacy shortly and leave in a prescription.

The decorations and tree are coming down today. I love Christmas, but I also love it when I clear away the decorations and restore a bit of order. And my sitting room always looks so much bigger when the tree has gone.

DCat2 is in playful mood and is chasing her Christmas toys around the sitting room and hall. She's so funny to watch - she kind of tosses them up in the air and then chases after them. DCat1 is perched on the top of the armchair, looking out the window.

Good afternoon folks & a very Happy New Year 🎈🎇💥🎆🥂 @lucysmam you were missed! Hope you continue to recover well 💐💐 I haven’t RTWT so love & hugs to anyone else who is or has been poorly or struggling over the festive season 🤗🥰
Planned to visit a lovely NT property today as they have an Arthurian themed Christmas but there’s a yellow weather warning here & although it’s nice & sunny now, there have been sleety showers & it’s cold. I’m not familiar with part of the route either & it’s on some smaller roads which could be icy. DH brought me a cuppa in bed before he started work at 8. DD17 has been at her GF’s since NYE. So far I have tidied up a bit, given 2 of the bunnies some cabbage, done the dishwasher, emptied the kitchen bin, posted my Batwoman costume which eventually sold on FB Marketplace & popped to the chemist. Need to sort something for tea as DH was going to make his famous chocolate chilli but Tescos had no ordinary red chillis yesterday & we cba to go elsewhere! There’s a freezer full of food but not actually much to eat, if that makes any sense!! Might order Chinese & DH can either have their sausage & chips or go to the chippy. Or else we could have an Indian. One of our local restaurants delivers & they do a cracking duck curry. We’ve started watching “ The Good Doctor” which is enjoyable so far so might put that on tonight or choose a film. Have a good Saturday all 🙂🙂🙂

Good afternoon Lucysmam and others. I'm so glad to see you back! I missed you and hope you are feeling better. Flu is a bugger.
I have had two coffees then tea and toast. Then out for second breakfast with family to say farewell to my aunt and uncle who are heading to Spain for a couple of months. The boys were very well behaved and we had a lovely time. I have dropped ds off at the station and put on a washing. The bed has been changed and I'll do the whites next. Then it's pottering. I took the last of the lights off the wee tree at the front door so I'm completely de- Christmassed. Dinner will be steak pie and mashed neeps. In between is mindless telly watching. Have a good day all

Morning all and a happy new year! Well, not quite so happy here as a very complex and difficult situation with elderly parents has flared up again. It feels like we've been stuck on this miserable treadmill for years! I'm definitely feeling sorry for myself as I've been awake and ruminating over things since the crack of dawn. Will try to shake myself out of it after posting.

Had lovely bacon and egg rolls for breakfast and have got some laundry on the go. DH and DS are at the dump to look at the second hand shop there - DS loves a vintage games console. He's going swimming with a friend later and then we might seek out some snow man building snow as we've only had a few flurries here. Don't know what's for tea, maybe fish pie, maybe steak. Might crack open a last bottle of fizz to see if that helps my gloomy mood, and get on with the Christmas jigsaw. Hope everyone has a great day.

Good afternoon @lucysmam , I nearly forgot to look out for your thread. Again.
We were out quite early with the dogs, very cold but bright sunshine and not too icy underfoot. I have ordered shoe grip thingy to put on my boots when it’s snow or ice, I really fear falling over as I definitely won’t bounce at my age!
Came back and had coffee, sourdough toast with avocado and smoked salmon, did the ironing, tidied the kitchen and lit the wood burner after hauling in more logs and kindling. DH eventually finished vacuuming through so the house is reasonably clean and tidy at the moment.
Hope you’re feeling much better soon @lucysmam , DS was unwell for nearly a month with it. Luckily we’re vaccinated so I am hoping we’ll escape it but there seems to be so many bugs around at the moment.
Happy New Year everyone, even if it’s a tad late!

ThereIsATInWater · 03/01/2026 12:39

Absolutely nothing and i'm bored silly.

If I don't plan or decide what we're doing DH doesn't, so I'm doing nothing., but I'm bored.

Giggorata · 03/01/2026 12:39

Good morning, lucysmam and all. Or afternoon really. Happy new year!
I was FaceTiming with my sister in Ireland in the early hours, so late to rise.
I hope everyone with flu or viruses gets well soon. DH had something ghastly over Xmas, so he was keeping to himself the whole time. We didn’t even eat dinner together, or see in 2026.
I'm keeping the decorations up until the traditional Twelfth Night, as usual. Something has got to be done properly!
Today is the day to begin on the the laundry mountain. The boiler room has been out of. commission for long enough, while the medicinal compound full of gold or whatever dries.
Dinner tonight will be leftover roast pork for DH and a veg curry for me, as my digestion is slightly dodgy and it always helps.
DH is well enough to potter about today and has been using his Xmas chainsaw in the yard. Glad about this, as I have just seen some flakes of snow. This also triggers my reflex action when it snows, namely to make soup. Leek and potato, I think.

Hoppinggreen · 03/01/2026 12:54

Good Morning
I am about to go to Sainers, we have friends coming for dinner this evening so I need some stuff for that, I am making a couple of currys
Theen I need to tackle the bathrooms but the rest of the house is ok so just a bit of a hoover to remover the dog fur (GR)

gingercat02 · 03/01/2026 12:55

@Giggorata we do usually wait until 12th night. This year that doesn't work unfortunately. Today is the best option.

dontforgetme · 03/01/2026 13:01

Good afternoon @lucysmam and all.

Definitely feels like a normal weekend when I saw your thread! Hope you had a wonderful Christmas.

I’ve spent the morning decluttering and cleaning. All Christmas stuff is down and my house looks totally bare! Going to jump in the shower now and head to Asda to grab stir fry ingredients for dinner. Other than that there is fuck all else on the agenda for today which I am very pleased about! Will do some Lego and play with ds then settle down for a film after dinner.

Have lovely Saturdays all.

DilemmaDelilah · 04/01/2026 08:12

Urgh I missed this yesterday! I had such a busy day I actually forgot it was Saturday and I didn't look at Mumsnet AT ALL!

I was up early finishing off getting things ready for our post-Christmas celebratory lunch. I haven't actually done this before but wanted to this year as I didn't get to see any of my family over Christmas itself. We have 'family' lunch with my daughter(s) and grandchildren quite often, but I wanted to expand it to include my sisters and an elderly cousin of my mothers who lives locally and am fond of, but rarely see. I only had one of my daughters as the other one lives 6 hours away, but there were still 9 of us which was a bit of a squeeze. We can get 10 around the dining table at a pinch, but there was SO much food every inch of the table was covered.

I didn't tell my daughter beforehand that there would be extra people there, as I knew she would be worried, but a) my sisters haven't seen her and the grandchildren for years, and my cousin hasn't seen her since before she had children!... and b) they are all nice people and I knew my cousin in particular is really good socially and would manage to keep the conversation going.

It was a really lovely meal and reunion, loads of chat, loads of laughing, good food (far too much of it), nice and relaxed.

We were completely worn out afterwards! I had leftover trifle for my evening meal, Mr Dilemma had mince pies.
