Did anyone delete socials for a while and it had a good impact on their life or not? I’m considering getting rid of it

Yes I’ve deleted instagram a couple of months ago and not planning to go back. Now the only lives I have to compare to my own are real life ones plus the time I have now I don’t doom scroll instagram.

Literally deleted the apps off my phone this morning so now only have MN to doomscroll

Me! I've deleted everything (apart from Mumsnet) "for a bit" ..but that "for a bit" turned into "for good" 😅

I'm so much better off. Mood lifted not viewing other peoples negativity, and my general feelings of anxiety improved too. I don't feel overstimulated or tempted to waste time scrolling instead of doing other things. I'm not stressed about the things people are getting whipped up about or about people being toxic.

It's been great. Now I use Mumsnet when I'm alone and have nothing specific to do..but I'm tempted to delete this too if I'm honest because there's a lot of negativity and moral superiority on here that irritates me 😅

I had Facebook and Twitter for a bit. Deleted years ago and never once missed them.

They are just pointless rubbish.

I am thinking about removing facebook as my feed is covered in ridiculous AI videos and it is driving me mad.

FunnyCrabDance · 02/01/2026 16:18

I uninstalled fb last January for a month, a digital detox. Went back to it in February.
Have done the same this January, I like fb to keep up to date with various friends and family and local news but also felt I benefited from a short break, too easy to scroll mindlessly for far to long!

I did this four week thing with The Guardian last year, they sent an email every week for 4 weeks with instructions. It's free coaching.

Since then I've deleted Reddit and never gone back. I've also deactivated Facebook and go on it once a month then log out again. I've read tons of books and felt a lot better. It worked for me.

I still look at MN but I don't have a problem with that as I use it less than the others and I live abroad so it reminds me of home. I think you can still do the Guardian thing if you are interested. It really made me think about how much I was on my phone.

You have one life. Do you really want to spend it looking at your phone?

The apps on our phones are designed to be addictive, but if we recognize what is happening, we can claw back our free time

Yes. Ive not had facebook for a year anyway that was last years resolution. This year instagram has been deleted. Ill see how things are in a few months but I would like to get rid forever!

Notmycircusnotmyotter · 02/01/2026 16:47

Who's abit?

bettyblackdog · 02/01/2026 16:51

I got rid of all of them except Mumsnet for a while, just find other ways to waste time rather than doom scrolling. I do miss the updates on Facebook of what’s going on such as the local community centre events and what shops have offers on etc but the seeing what Deidre had for lunch is not a miss at all.

ABeerInTheSunshineMakesMeHappy · 02/01/2026 16:58

It’s MN that I’m thinking of deleting (but probably won’t). My usage of Instagram and FB is very restrained (once or twice a week) but I get very frustrated with myself at the amount of time I spend on here. Mainly because it just tends to be people rehashing the same old moans or arguments. I like the holiday board and the ‘reminisces’ type threads or people sharing funny stories.
