Care to share the oddest thing house guests have done in your home this festive period?

We've had many guests over the festive period and most have been an absolute delight. However, have just waved off a few of DHs friends and they:

Removed phone chargers and toiletries left in the guest room/bathroom and taken home

Used (a used!) dish cloth to wipe their face then replaced on the sink

Complained we won't allow scary/violent TV until our young children are in bed

WTF?

Edited for typos

For those unsure how to pack a used flannel - I rarely remember a plastic food bag for it, so top options are:

  1. Take a really old one that is at the end of its service. Bin it on the last day.
  2. Wring it out when done. Then roll it inside your pyjamas to be laundered when you get home. I always wear clothes at night in other people's houses and a change of bed necessitates a change of pj's.

Had dh’s siblings and partners over for lunch post-Christmas. One partner didn’t show up - no warning and no real explanation other than ‘she couldn’t make it’. Then later, again with no warning, same sibling, having accepted the offer of pudding minutes before, suddenly announced as I was dishing up, that he couldn’t stay for pudding and had to leave right away. Rushed off to get (very nice) presents for everyone from his car, dumped them in the hall for us to sort out, and left, barely saying goodbye to anyone and didn’t really say thank you to us. I get that things happen, and he probably had good reason, but I’m afraid if you don’t observe the social norms, you just come across as bloody rude. There, I’ve said it….

Boododedoop · 03/01/2026 00:33

Is it a a specific hotel chain you’re all talking about I wonder

No. Various hotel chains in various places.

Who provides flannels for guests? They are considered personal items (you don't get them in hotels) and not everyone uses one. I haven't used one in about 50 years.

All hotels I stay in provide flannels …..

They've taken your toiletries, like they think you're a hotel? 😂

I did once have a guest uae a screw driver to remove a door handle, but that was an honest mistake

Wait, I can't get past this about the door handle! What's the story please?

@GreenSmithing do I know you?! was the guest called David?!

I did also know of a guest called David who as well as removing a door handle also dismantled the shower thinking it would help so I am intrigued ... (not sure where he got the tools from but he definitely had form)

This is from the past -
She invited herself to spend the summer with us.
That didn’t surprise me, but it really irked my husband.
In her defense, I loved her my whole life.
Husband only had just met her.
We spent the days floating on the pool, drinking strong margaritas & reading all the rags. There was some guy from New York that was in every rag every week and we raked him over the coals. Turns out this was Trump but it was the first time we’d ever heard about him.
It was 1987.
We thought Donald Trump was a joke.
My husband complained to me about her - not about what she did to him, but about the dishes she left out, or the milk or her clothes.
Yeah - I’d known that for my entire 31 years. What else was new?
But he never said her or me.
Because if my ex-husband had threatened me with the ol’ her or me, crapola,
I would’ve chosen her.
Hahaha

I haven't used a flannel in decades. I use cleanser and toner on cotton wool pads. It's never crossed my mind to supply flannels for guests!

What does Mr. WheresMyWimpleCrimper use?

I'd assume a problematic relationship with lots of drama, and be a bit concerned.

One member of our party thought it hilarious to let all of the horses out of their stables at 2am, then proceeded to run naked through the orchard singing the theme tune from Wind in the Willows.
Our DD's governess fell asleep blind drunk in the buttery; we only managed to locate her after 2 whole days of frantic searching.

MIL and exMIL had a jolly good scrap over carving, followed swiftly by FIL and SIL being arrested for drink driving, crashing the car into a historical phone box the next village down.

Next year, we are considering shutting ourselves up in the wine cellar just to get some much deserved peace!

Its a facecloth, not a flannel. ,(once it cleans the face) and if you don't have one what do you clean a child's hands/face with?

😂😂
Always makes me laugh when people do this on MN. Post after post of people using a word for an object, then someone pops in to tell us we all have the wrong word!

Thriftygal · 03/01/2026 01:28

Sorry to continue the flannel derail.
I use an oil cleanser so use a fresh flannel/face cloth everyday for my morning and evening cleanse. I use a sponge for showers/baths so no chance of any mix up.

I stayed in a Doubletree Hilton hotel last night and they provided a flannel. I also took a flannel with me so used the hotel one for the shower.

Is there anyone who washes their face with soap and water, then dries it on their towel?

Bones101 · 03/01/2026 01:48

My parents house has an indoor pool. I don't know how but my mums cousin once left and said her goodbyes and after we realised her whole suitcase full of clothing was in the pool. Mum text about it a few days later and she said ah it's grand throw them out. Don't know how they got there it was bizzare 🤣

I like to dry my face on our 12th century unicorn tapestry, personally, since it hangs adjacent to the bathroom entrance hall. It's either that or a few scraps of Lidl's finest 'simply' kitchen roll.

pregnantprayingmantis · 03/01/2026 02:02

PILs staying for nearly three weeks (from overseas) taking over my house like they own it. Seemingly unable to go out without DH and only using their room for sleeping preferring to be in the communal areas of the house at all times. Closing doors I leave open, opening and closing curtains. Putting things away in all the wrong places. Constantly in kitchen and laundry, endlessly boiling full kettles and washing a couple of items of clothes to the point I’ve retreated upstairs to my bedroom so as bite my tongue.

Had several friends drop in over Xmas to see me and each time they come and join without being invited. On one occasion friend was having a personal crisis so I had deliberately gone onto our back deck and closed the door firmly behind us. PILS seeing a guest decided to sit at dining watching us from inside and when they couldn’t bare it any longer barged out onto the deck complaining it was hot in the house. It was hotter outside. I had to ask them to go back inside, close the blind with the hot sun streaming in, put on the AC (which is how we deal with the heat) and they were perturbed.

falalalalalalalallama · 03/01/2026 02:05

TMI alert!!

But I use loads of loo roll because it often takes several wipes to get clean. I sometimes wonder how other people don't use so much! Maybe my diet makes my poo extra sticky? Maybe my bum is a weird shape? Maybe other people walk round with pooey bums!

I really don't know, but my mum and OH always have a go at me for it!

Sorry for the TMI but you did ask! Grin

mondaytosunday · 03/01/2026 02:12

I use what I call a facecloth (though some of my older relatives - and I’m 63 - call them flannels). I’m the only one using it at my house so it stays in the shower til I wash it once a week. I have never stayed in someone’s house who has offered me one and I don’t think most people use them as I haven’t seen them in bathrooms I’ve been in to - they use their hands or a sponge or those crinkled up nylon things. My DD uses a face wipe if she’s wearing makeup and then her hands to apply cleanser to her face. Not sure what she uses in the shower but she doesn’t have a facecloth.
Most hotels do not provide them, and I’ve stayed in hotels from NYC to Sydney, so I make sure to bring my own with a ziplock bag to put them in when returning home.
I have not had a guest do anything weird, though my mother was once asked by a woman if she could use her bedroom (she was there for dinner only). There was a bathroom downstairs I have no idea why she’d want to use her bedroom. We even had a guest bedroom but it was ‘can I use YOUR bedroom’. No idea what transpired after that.

Lilyflame · 03/01/2026 02:12

I had one guest who cleaned, tidied, hoovered, did laundry, organised drawers and offered to put up my xmas decorations. Love her.
another couple somehow broke the bathroom caddy shelf, didn’t tell me and just disposed of it. I found this utterly bizarre as he’s like a brother and usually should be able to tell me anything.

Me! Or a foaming cleanser and rinse off with water, pat dry with towel.
Bit bemused by all the posters who think that those of us who don't have flannels/facecloths in our lives are somehow mingers.
And I would NEVER use a facecloth in a hotel - who knows where it's been?

Okiedokie123 · 03/01/2026 02:32

@ThoseWeirdStones I thought you were joking about the horses the governess etc….. then I saw your comment about the unicorn tapestry…..ha ha!

Okiedokie123 · 03/01/2026 02:34

@VoltaireMittyDream I feel so sad for your db’s children. How old are they? Surely they need some help from social services? MH support? And obviously their mother needs help too.

ManyPigeons · 02/01/2026 16:52

Every house I’ve ever stayed in… how else would people wash their face and take off their makeup? And you can’t take your own because then if you use it the morning you leave it’s wet in the suitcase.

Use a ziplok bag.

Not a festive one but my PIL think that if it isn't something that they would do or choose it's wrong. So the only time they stayed overnight (invited themselves because our home was convenient for an activity they wanted to go to) I came home from work to discover they'd thrown away something they didn't like and were installing a replacement they found acceptable and went out and bought. The following day my FIL was in the cupboard under the stairs. I asked him what he was doing. He tried dodging the question ("nothing", but you're rummaging around in one of my cupboards so what are you doing "looking at something", and on). Eventually I got out of him that him and MIL didn't like our shower (which ran off the mains and was a lovely and strong) and so he was going to install an electrical shower (the electrical shower in my PILs house gave out barely a dribble of water - no thanks). When I politely thanked him but explained we were perfectly happy with our shower, he laughed at me and told me I was ridiculous.

I was young at the time and hadn't quite found my voice to challenge my elders. I absolutely have now.

Who the bloody hell do they think they are?

Confusedmeanderings · 03/01/2026 02:52

Why use a ziplock bag for your face cloth, What's wrong with a wash bag?
