Care to share the oddest thing house guests have done in your home this festive period?

We've had many guests over the festive period and most have been an absolute delight. However, have just waved off a few of DHs friends and they:

Removed phone chargers and toiletries left in the guest room/bathroom and taken home

Used (a used!) dish cloth to wipe their face then replaced on the sink

Complained we won't allow scary/violent TV until our young children are in bed

WTF?

Edited for typos

Not a festive one but my PIL think that if it isn't something that they would do or choose it's wrong. So the only time they stayed overnight (invited themselves because our home was convenient for an activity they wanted to go to) I came home from work to discover they'd thrown away something they didn't like and were installing a replacement they found acceptable and went out and bought. The following day my FIL was in the cupboard under the stairs. I asked him what he was doing. He tried dodging the question ("nothing", but you're rummaging around in one of my cupboards so what are you doing "looking at something", and on). Eventually I got out of him that him and MIL didn't like our shower (which ran off the mains and was a lovely and strong) and so he was going to install an electrical shower (the electrical shower in my PILs house gave out barely a dribble of water - no thanks). When I politely thanked him but explained we were perfectly happy with our shower, he laughed at me and told me I was ridiculous.

I was young at the time and hadn't quite found my voice to challenge my elders. I absolutely have now.

Who provides flannels for guests? They are considered personal items (you don't get them in hotels) and not everyone uses one. I haven't used one in about 50 years.

I do - both provide them for guests and use them!

AndSoitComesAroundAgain · 02/01/2026 22:53

Oh my gosh, this thread is an eye opener, what CFs. MN bring back the laughing emoji. If I didn't know the context I would think they were bad guests in a hotel, not in a friend's home. The nerve of some of these people, mind boggling.

I use them too, I like to wash my face in the bath and at night in the sink. I remember being in a hotel once, and having to dip the corner of the bath sheet in the bath while in said bath! 😂 I always make sure I pack them now.

I think it’s likely that he was just going through a list of polite interactions and asked how your mum was without thinking. It’s something I saw happening once and like your dad the person was mortified about his faux pas. He was elderly and there was absolutely nothing wrong with his memory, he was just nervous in a social setting,

I hope your FIL is well and there’s nothing wrong with his memory. And I’m sorry you lost your darling mum.

I did this to my dear friend. My own dm had recently died and i just wasn't operating properly. I burst into tears as soon as I realised my mistake.

Every hotel I stayed in in 2025 didn't.

So glad you said this - I thought I was going mad! I couldn’t think of ever seeing one in a hotel. This thread has been an education- I’m in my fifties and my grandparents used flannels but I had no idea anyone used them now!

Ohnobackagain · 02/01/2026 23:26

Did you ask if they ‘mistakenly took the charger’ @CharlieWeasleysWife ?

ManyPigeons · 02/01/2026 23:30

DaughterOfPearl · 02/01/2026 20:24

Of course you can take your own! Just put it in one of those resealable food bags when you're done🤷‍♀️

Or I could use the one provided and not have a wet flannel in my bag.

So do you just not wash your face morning/night? Don’t take off your makeup or cleanse your face?

How do you wash if not with a flannel? Everyone I know uses them - they’re piled in my best friends bathroom, my mums, my husband, my old flatmate, my uni flatmates bathrooms!

NoCommentingFromNowOn · 02/01/2026 23:39

A flannel is quite a personal thing, people wash their arses and feet with them. I don’t think I’d like to use anyone else’s in case they’d not been washed like I wash them somehow. Never seen one in a hotel (but I don’t stay in them too frequently) and never been offered one at anyone’s house either. Really interested that so many have them provided in hotels. Is it a specific hotel chain you’re all talking about I wonder?

You absolutely do in decent hotels, usually more than one per person. I use a flannel daily, I have loads. They are no more personal than towels, and equally clean.

Could be worse, I've just seen this on reddit. It's a voice recorder and camera.

Ahhhhh apparently people think it’s fake, she came back with updates and there were a few contradictory things, it started to sound too made up.

On Christmas Day, FIL asked me how my DM was doing. She died in a road accident just over two years ago.

He has now agreed, after six months of nagging from the family, to see the GP about his memory. To be fair to the old chap, he's absolutely mortified about what he said.

My dad did something similar last year, but he's in his 50s, room full of people. Let's call my DH Dave 'hows Dave's Mum doing?'...'she died last year dad'. Fortunately my dh wasn't in the room at the time. What's worse is we were on holiday with my dad while she was unwell and he knew we might need to leave at short notice if she declined rapidly.

My grandma died a few weeks before Christmas this year, I had told him but I was absolutely dreading that he'd do this again as I wouldn't be able.to hold it together it would just be too raw.

cakewitch · 02/01/2026 23:42

I have a stack of flannels in my bathroom. For washing my cleanser off my face. And also there for anyone in my house to use. Im starting to think im an exception and a bit odd now. 😂

I have never understood people who don't need to use face flannels and hotels or hosts who don't provide them along with the towels. But I am a person with complex desires.

TTCbabynumber22025 · 02/01/2026 23:48

I invited my immediate family round one evening over the festive period, it was over dinner time and said I would do pizza and party food for everyone. Probably spent close to about £100. No one ate anything.

I had to throw the vast majority away, it was all food i know they liked. I have no idea why they didn’t have anything but I’m still a bit upset about it.

… you do get them in hotels?

Recently I’ve been in hotels that specifically provide black ones in case you’re wearing mascara that would stain a white flannel. And if I bring my own am I supposed to pack a damp cloth back in my bag at the end of my stay?

Of course you get flannels in hotels . We have small basket of flannels / washcloths in the bathroom right next to the towels.

I haven't used a flannel in decades. I use cleanser and toner on cotton wool pads. It's never crossed my mind to supply flannels for guests!

RickertyRocker · 03/01/2026 00:01

Arranged a time that everyone agreed to in advance. Dinner at 5pm, arrival from 4pm. One couple arrived 2.5 hours and another 1.5 hours early. My OH is more understanding than I am.

Ooh love these kinda threads

Wishingwelltree · 03/01/2026 00:03

Its a facecloth, not a flannel. ,(once it cleans the face) and if you don't have one what do you clean a child's hands/face with?

EstoyRobandoSuCasa · 03/01/2026 00:09

OP, if you haven't already, I'd contact these guests and tell them that when they charged their phones, they took your chargers with them and you need them back ASAP.

I've been pretty lucky with Christmas house guests, but there was one who gobbled up pretty much all the food in our cupboards and when he showered, he ignored the guest towels I left him and insisted on drying himself with someone else's towel or the bath mat.

Every house I’ve ever stayed in… how else would people wash their face and take off their makeup? And you can’t take your own because then if you use it the morning you leave it’s wet in the suitcase.

How do you cope with going swimming and having wet costumes afterwards? just do the same thing - pop in a waterproof bag or wrap it up in a towel, then wash when you get home 🤷‍♀️

Same here. I wash my face with them.
Lots of hotels have them too.

In my suitcase, I'll put a damp one inside a shower cap. Its not sopping wet, and won't make anything else wet either.
