Care to share the oddest thing house guests have done in your home this festive period?

CharlieWeasleysWife · 01/01/2026 15:32

We've had many guests over the festive period and most have been an absolute delight. However, have just waved off a few of DHs friends and they:

Removed phone chargers and toiletries left in the guest room/bathroom and taken home

Used (a used!) dish cloth to wipe their face then replaced on the sink

Complained we won't allow scary/violent TV until our young children are in bed

WTF?

Edited for typos

At least yours turned up. A number of years ago I’d invited immediate family around for an evening buffet Christmas Day. I put on a decent spread and bought drinks for everyone. An hour after they were meant to arrive I phoned to see where they were. They’d decided they weren’t coming. We ate what we could for a couple of days after but most of it had to be binned. Never invited them again.

That was lovely of you but tbf most people wouldn't want a buffet after Christmas dinner.

I use washable make up remover pads , a fresh one each day. I have a net bag to wash them in.
I am somewhat traumatised by the permanently soggy, damp smelling face cloths draped over the sink of my youth, my mum still has one !

it is not just your face that needs washing

Is there anyone who washes their face with soap and water, then dries it on their towel?

Not with soap as such, but a foaming face wash in the shower in the morning and an oil cleaner at night, both of wish get washed off with water and I always dry my face with a towel (not sure what else you would use)

Am I the only person who lathers up their hands well and washes themselves with said hands?? Like when you wash your hands - for which you don't need a flannel!

Edited

And then splashes soap/water up the wall and all over the floor if you are anything like my brother when rinsing it off!

The sub debate about flannels / facecloths on here has been peak mumsnet - multiple people dogmatically explaining the presence /absence of said fabric squares in hotels / guest bathrooms with added "this is my way of cleaning my face and I can't comprehend that other people are choosing to do it differently/ wrongly"

Not to mention the irritating and self obsessed way in which people enter a long thread that has moved way on since a particular comment and add their twopennorth as if a) nobody will have already said it and b) their take is the most interesting and relevant. At least on a thread like this it's just boring, unlike the important threads about serious stuff where people join after days/weeks and respond to the first post as if nothing has been said since then, repeating pointless or dangerous nonsense.

Flowerlovinglady · 03/01/2026 10:51

Agreed, a lovely well behaved dog is most welcome. However, many dogs are not well trained and their owners often seem oblivious to their impact on other dogs and people. In any case, your house, your rules, end of.

ooh - they sound good - please can you share a link?

I’ll try ! I’ve had them a really long time however ! I’m pretty sure Boots or Amazon or the like will have some .
I wouldn’t have the machine in every day to wash face cloths, but these little pads come to no harm being left until I put a wash on .

but not all guests use the shower

We have a reasonably sized hallway with empty coat racks, shoe racks and bag space for visitors.

Nevertheless, my relatives walk all the way through the hall to dump their bags, coats, vape, dirty travel cups, and half eaten food all over my dining table, whether or not we’ve set it for dinner.

Sam9769 · 03/01/2026 09:54

Oh yeah, another thing the MIL does is that when towels are thread bare and no longer usable as towels, she cuts them up and uses them as cleaning cloths to wipe down the kitchen worktops and the kitchen table! YUK!

But surely that's just old-fashioned thriftiness? And better for the environment than buying towels, possibly microfibre ones, specifically for the counters. They are presumably put in the washing machine.

Sounds like my husband. He can cover a shower screen with toothpaste from about 6 feet I swear !

One of our guests has broken our toilet seat and then denied it when I asked them. I told them it didn’t matter but they have actually snapped the hinge on the seat which is quite hard to do. I have ordered a new seat and it is waiting to be fitted. I don’t know why people can’t be honest if I had done this I would own up and offer to buy another one

Weird, isn't it. We had a family of four to stay and one them pulled the sink off the bathroom wall. No one admitted it. We tried to fix it back to the wall but it cracked in the process, so we ended up having to get a new one.

HoppingPavlova · 03/01/2026 11:01

Completely understand the charger/toiletries. I would have packed up the chargers thinking they were ours (DH takes a bag filled with plugs/chargers everywhere we go), so I just would have thought I was efficient packing up. Similarly, DH likely would have thought the toiletries were ours (as I’m in charge of taking those when we go places) and would have thought he was efficient in packing.

However, when we got home and unpacked and discovered such an error, one of us would definitely have sent a message ‘Hi Bob/Jane, thanks for having us, had a great stay, it seems I inadvertently packed your chargers/toiletries thinking they were ours, I’m such an idiot and sorry about that. Will pop them back in the post next week’.

YorkshirePuddingsGreatestFan · 03/01/2026 11:04

Not this Christmas but previously friends with a toddler stayed.

As we were saying bye and leaving, they tinkly laughed and said the toddler had thrown a potty full of wee down the stairs while they were packing up, so I'd probably want to shampoo my stair carpet 😬

SquirrelFan · 03/01/2026 11:06

Sorry, anti-flannel-derailers but I am interested, how do you not splash water all around/have it drip down your arms (usually down into your pj sleeves which won't stay pushed up)? (those who use wipes, I get that's not a problem) With a flannel, I squeeze out the water till it's only damp and hot, wipe my face free of cleanser, repeat if necessary, wring it and hang it to dry. Replace every few days. Also it never occurred to me that people use a flannel for other parts of their anatomy!

IHeartKingThistle · 03/01/2026 11:08

Oh god @SquirrelFan, don’t fan the flame! Start your own flannel thread! 😂

MaggieFS · 03/01/2026 10:40

Ok so I’ve had a look and there’s no label on either the bag or the pads I’m afraid. But if you google washable make up remover pads you’ll find some .

SquirrelFan · 03/01/2026 11:11

Weirdest thing guests did: put up a blackout curtain in the guest room, using strong sticky backed tape that subsequently took the paint off the window frame.
Other guests: did not shower in three days, also left weird vivid pink dribbly stains on sheets - clearly not a bodily fluid but can't imagine what it was!

Apologies because I have not RATFT but I have read most of it.

Has the mystery of the screwed off door handle being solved?

No, but you should definitely scroll back if you don’t want to miss internet gold of The Great Flannel Debate. Or would like to share with the group how many you own, how often you wash them, whether they’re strictly for your face (or perhaps the occasional cheeky bumhole swipe), or whether the hotels you frequent provide them or not. And if you don’t use flannels (or facecloths), well then what do you use to wash your face, @HoppityBun, and could we please have a detailed breakdown of exactly how that goes for you?

Honestly don’t blame you for not RTFT. I expect the poor OP has disappeared to nominate it for Classics.

2 people have used 7 loo rolls in 2 nights/3 days. That or they have taken loo rolls home with them - they had exclusive use of the en suite for their stay and I have asked himself
if he had been in to take them and he didn’t. That’s a lot of loo roll!

Could have a medical condition like inflammatory bowel disease.
Or contamination OCD.

PassportPanicFuuuck · 03/01/2026 11:18

Howmanycatsistoomany · 03/01/2026 02:24

Me! Or a foaming cleanser and rinse off with water, pat dry with towel.
Bit bemused by all the posters who think that those of us who don't have flannels/facecloths in our lives are somehow mingers.
And I would NEVER use a facecloth in a hotel - who knows where it's been?

Do you take your own sheets and towels when you stay in a hotel?

QueenofallIsee · 03/01/2026 11:18

omggggggg · 03/01/2026 09:34

Maybe they have ibs or a medical issue. The taking loo roll home is weird. How did you know?

They had exclusive use of a bathroom and I put 7 loo rolls in it the day that they arrived. I have loo roll storage racks and I remember it was 7 as they all hold 6 and I had one rogue roll!

luckylavender · 03/01/2026 11:25

ManyPigeons · 03/01/2026 10:32

IMO wet muslins, microfibre cloths etc that people are mentioning ARE flannels. They’re for the same use.

Flannels aren’t just for faces
