Am I just out of touch or is this obnoxious behaviour?

DH and I send $100 to his niece for Christmas.
She is 18 and lives in the states with DH's sister, her mother.
DH's sister and niece phoned today to say thanks.
Niece was talking to my husband F-ing and blinding as she was talking.
Towards the end of the conversation, as an afterthought, she thanked DH for the money and said that she would probably buy tampons with the money!

Is she an obnoxious teenager or am I out of touch and AIBU to think she is?

well the tampon comment is weird, it isn't like he sent her a $5 bill as I'd find the comment quite dismissive. the swearing, unfortunately it's just part of some people's vocab.

Probably thinks she’s cool. I swear a lot but usually in context. Not when thanking family members for gifts. Tampons is odd. I’d buy her a packet of tampons next year and be like 🤷‍♀️

Tampons a bizarre comment. Was this perhaps said in retaliation to something said in the phone conversation?

I would’ve said something stupid like this at that age. Just nervousness and trying to be funny and not really being very conversationally adroit. I wouldn’t overthink it.

L0bstersLass · 01/01/2026 01:09

I find her language and comments unnecessary and unacceptable.

What does this mean?

It sounds like she said thanks and has a plan to use the funds. This WOULD worry me if I thought that she was trying to send a message that she would not otherwise have tampons and so was calling out for help, but the context you've provided doesn't;t really support that. I'd check with her mother if you're unsure, though.

CalmShaker · 01/01/2026 01:13

I would've said can you lend me some to protect my ears from the swearing (if that's what got on his tits)

And anywho, who who paid the cost of the call?

Nope! It was a face time call with DH, niece and her mother.
It was an otherwise pleasant call.

It was a FaceTime call so no cost to anyone!
