What are you taking for this flu?

I'm taking cold and flu tablets, a tea with lemon, honey, herbs etc, chicken soup, but my nose feels dry when I breathe and my throat feels like razor blades when I swallow. I've got some ice lollies and sorbet, but is there something else I can be doing/taking?

Jelly for me . Aldi do custard and jelly pots and i find they slide down without too much pain.

Codeine to suppress the cough, Vicks inhaler sticks for the congestion, soothers for the throat pain and Prosecco for everything else.

Oh god, I couldn't drink like this 😲

Alternating ibuprofen and paracetamol, spoon of honey before sleeping, black tea to wake up, mullein tea for the cough. Not felt this ill since .... I literally don't know. Its my first time this ill with kids to think about too and I'm desperately wishing I could just ride it out in bed.

EvangelinaMae · 31/12/2025 19:17

I'm feeling better at the moment except for the throat, it's like razor blades are in there.

Fishermen’s Friend cough lozenges were the only thing to stop the coughing fits, and Bottlegreen hot cordials helped because of the steam/warming. Avoiding cold air helped too!

Just paracetamol, water and tea with some chicken soup (when I must as not hungry). Awful isn’t it. Six days for me tomorrow.

Gargle salt water. Acts as a temporary anaesthetic. Grim. But works.

Bookkeepermum · 01/01/2026 18:48

Difflam spray from the pharmacy!

I'm nearly better, but I've heard you think you're getting better then it hits you again the next day.

At the moment I've got a blocked nose, slight sore throat and my teeth are hurting, and my jaw for some reason, I must have been clenching my jaw or grinding my teeth.

What I did was:
Mon, started feeling ill. Had a kiwi.

Tue, came down with it properly. Made chicken soup with lots of onion, garlic, ginger, rosemary, thyme. Had an epsom salt bath then cocooned in bed and sweat it out overnight. Made a pot of tea with mint green tea bags, lemon, cinnamon stick, rosemary, thyme, cloves, bay leaf, honey. Drank that all day, topping up. Took cold and flu tablets.

Wed, more tea, added kiwi to it. Slept a lot, stayed in bed. Had more soup.

Thu, took paracetamol, rested.

So obviously I didn't have flu but I had the aching bones, fever, chesty cough, my cough yesterday was so bad it was making me sick/hawk up mucus. But it's all passed very quickly for me.

Throat sprays are great

madaboutpurple · 01/01/2026 22:51

I had drinks of coffee and hot chocolate with cinnamon, nutmeg and ginger in them and that helped a lot.

Yes, I had some chlorhexidine mouthwash and gargled with that a few times until it ran out 🙄

No I haven't. I'm more chesty this morning, but less of a sore throat.

Throughout, paracetomol and ibuprofen, keeping note so I didn't overdose. Diluted blackcurrant cordial (with real sugar) to keep me hydrated and give me a little energy - I went right off tea and alcohol in the early days, and milk made me more phlegmy. Those little tubs of fruit cocktail, on their own or in jelly. When I started to eat, curry from the freezer or the chill cabinet - a little spicy warmth was comforting.

Vitamin B, Vitamin D.

4 weeks tomorrow. I'm able to eat more or less normally, if without my usual enthusiastic greed, but need hot meals, including stuff like baked beans or canned soup for lunch - and I'd been planning some lovely post-Christmas salad dinners. Not this year, alas. Stewed fruit instead of fresh fruit. But I am better than I was.

EvangelinaMae · 02/01/2026 09:36

😔 I hope everyone gets well soon.

I find saline nasal spray helps massively if I’ve got a blocked nose and if I can breathe I can sleep much better
Apart from that ibuprofen, paracetamol, medicated throat lozenges, loads of hot drinks and I give myself permission to eat anything that sounds at all appetising as long as it means I’m getting enough calories in me
