Very cold beach walk

We (2 x adults, 9yo, 7yo, dog) are considering driving an hour to the nearest seaside for a NYE walk tomorrow. The temperature is forecast to be dry, sunny and cold - 5 degrees, feels like 2!
There are dog friendly places we can eat lunch inside.
Is this a nice idea but in reality too cold to be enjoyable?

I love the sound of this! Great fun. I’d do it.

but in fact I’ll probably be in bed with my heated blanket! I say do it though

CheeriosOrFrosties · 30/12/2025 15:27

Do it! Nothing like a bracing seaside walk! Make sure you’ve all got coats, hats and scarves and you’ll be grand.

macaroonmayhem · 30/12/2025 15:29

100% do it.

We used to do it when DH was here, I have done it less since he's been gone. Do it, it's good for you!

BlueBlueCowWondering · 30/12/2025 15:30

Dress well and have flasks of coffee/ hot chocolate in the car for afterwards. Perfect plan.

Makemeanonymous · 30/12/2025 15:32

We went for a beach walk today in conditions very like those you are describing. It was very cold- probably less than 5°

It was beautiful. And really quite busy. People of all ages, including families with children. And lots of dogs. I'm lucky I live a couple of minutes from the beach but a lot of people were visitors.

I think you really should get out and enjoy your walk tomorrow. It's a lovely way to spend the day.

WilfredsPies · 30/12/2025 15:36

No, it’ll be lovely. We live not too far from the beach and are there in all weathers. You’ll really feel like the cobwebs have been blown away. It’s really refreshing, especially if it’s sunny.

That wind is going to hit you right in the face though, so don’t wear hats unless they’re woolly ones that won’t blow off. Tie your hair back if anyone has long hair. Make sure you can zip your coats and jackets up and I always wear a scarf to shield my face.

Also, dogs with normally perfect recall tend to revert back to wolves when faced with commands to either get out of the water or not to make a break for freedom, so take plenty of towels for the dog (especially if it’s a beach with a ‘do not swim’ warning because of sewage), and if he’s ever shown so much as a glint of mischief in his eye, keep him on a retractable leash. One of my favourite things to do is take a flask down to the dog beach in the winter and sit watching dogs torture their owners by making them chase after them 😂

Moll2020 · 30/12/2025 15:38

Never too cold for a walk on the beach with the dog. I live 4 minutes from the beach and am down there every morning at 7am, it’s blooming freezing but fabulous watching the sunrise. Tomorrow I’m going West to a different walk to a different beach. Dress up warm and don’t forget a ball to play with to keep them warm.

saveforthat · 30/12/2025 15:38

I live by a beach and recommended a snood for keeping face and head warm.

itsthetea · 30/12/2025 15:38

If you have the clothes for it , it’s often lovely

younger Children often dont have decent warm clothes though and can feel the chill much quicker than adults

Mumsknot · 30/12/2025 15:40

We went today and the beach is heaving! The sunny weather is lovely

ThisElatedShark · 30/12/2025 15:41

Check the wind forecast. I love a cold winter beach walk, but the wind (and of course rain) can totally ruin it. If it’s a calm day, wrap up walm and have a lovely time!

GRCP · 30/12/2025 15:43

Thanks everyone! We’ll do it. I think if we lived nearer to the beach it would be a no brainer, I was just a bit worried about doing the drive and it being too cold. But you’ve inspired me!
Dog has more than a hint of mischief so will be on a lead!!

We have 2 border collies, live 10 minutes from the beach. It's usually our go to for winter walks, well they run of course, because often the fields are muddy. We do dress suitably though.

shuffleofftobuffalo · 30/12/2025 16:06

so long as you’re wearing windproof coats. It’s the wind that kills it. If you’re not dressed properly it will be miserable, if you are it will be a great way to spend the day! Have fun!

canuckup · 30/12/2025 16:25

Sounds fabulous and not too cold at all

WibbleyPie · 30/12/2025 16:29

Wrap up warm and take towels for the dog and you'll be fine - if you are going somewhere popular then try and book your lunch ahead - I work in a seaside food place and get very busy on Nye and busier still as many other local places close early for food.

Emmz1510 · 30/12/2025 18:44

Sounds divine, especially if you incorporate a stop for some hot chocolate/coffee!

Jok77 · 30/12/2025 18:47

We went for a walk along the seafront on Sunday morning- we love a winter walk! As long as you're wrapped up warm, and the dog is too, it will be fine. We often have fish and chips to warm ourselves up after a walk or stop for a hot drink. Fortunately, we are only 15 miles from the coast.

If you lived nearer the beach you'd probably take it for granted and still be asking the same question!

Lauralou19 · 30/12/2025 18:58

Definitely! We live near the beach and go far more in winter than the Summer. Summer it’s packed and doesn’t look half as nice as the Winter (and we are in a stunning area). Chilly walk on the beach all wrapped up with a hot chocolate is pretty much my perfect Winters Day. Just make sure you bring warm jackets, hat, gloves and you wont feel the cold once walking.

Middlemarch123 · 30/12/2025 19:03

I walk dogs for a living and live near the north Norfolk coast. I wrap up warm and walk two border collies by the sea, even if I try to walk them through the dunes, they tug to get near the sea! Today they went swimming, came out, shook, then ran in again, silly sods. Dried them off, then walked them home, where they zonked out in their baskets. Then picked up the pugs, who had their fleece flying jackets on, walked quickly, for them, half a mile inland and toddled home for treats and the best place near the wood burner.

So OP, you a pug or a collie?

AphroditesSeashell · 30/12/2025 19:05

As they say...there's no such thing as bad weather, only the wrong clothes.

Wrap up warm, plenty layers. Sounds lovely to me.

GRCP · 30/12/2025 19:08

@Middlemarch123haha I guess we’ll find out! What a lovely job. I’ve got a nutty spaniel cross and he loves a walk but I’m not sure he’ll brave the sea!

Best kind of weather for a long dog walk, as long as you are dressed appropriately.
