Need a good cry. What should I watch?

Need to get some emotions out and have a good cry, ideally with a film (or series?) that ends up at least slightly uplifting so that I'm not totally depressed afterwards.
Any suggestions?!
I'll be watching alone so needn't be child-friendly. No other requirements, just needs to let me get a lot of stuck tears out. Thank you!

After Life! I alternate between laughing and crying and then back to laughing. So good.

I have the coldest black heart, so if a film makes me cry, you know it’s bad.
The ‘Baby Mine’ song in Dumbo just does me in. 😭

The Sade song ‘Right By Your Side’ just kills me.

I couldn’t watch that after the first time even as a child and seeing all the merch recently set me off a lot

Manchester by the sea

I was going to suggest ‘all of us strangers’ but it’s not uplifting at the end.. so yeah. Don’t watch it ..

Shadowlands - I have never cried so much at a film in all my life. I had to pause it at one point to gather myself. About CS Lewis and his love for his wife, so based on a true story. Starring Anthony Hopkins.

I watched it on a plane - embarrassing how much I cried

user98732 · 30/12/2025 19:30

Sophies choice - harrowing sad though

DottieB · 30/12/2025 19:36

Films - Me Before You, Still Alice
Series - After Life
Any one of those will do it for you!
Hope you are ok OP Flowers

Thanks everyone. I started with Goodbye June, which got me bawling nicely (well, not nicely but effective). So many suggestions - it's brilliant! Will pick something to move on to next..

One day - series on Netflix

This! I cried on and off for about 3 days after watching this! Really threw me. Very uplifting too though.

The new Kate Winslet film on Netflix.

I think it’s called Goodbye June

Oh I saw that advertised! Thank you for the reminder.
I cry at such daft random things that I can't think of any offhand.

Dean Spanley - has me in tears every time.

Also After Life.

MoonWoman69 · 30/12/2025 20:58

Goodbye, June. A mix of laughter and tears, just the right balance!

NancyJoan · 30/12/2025 20:59

Pride makes me sob. Great film, and v funny too.

Ursulla42 · 30/12/2025 21:44

”I Swear” is very moving and uplifting

powershowerforanhour · 30/12/2025 21:46

Muriel's Wedding might not be quite tearjerking enough for your requirements, but I get a bit emosh at some scenes - the David and Muriel/Mariel "All my life I've wanted to win." Me too" scene, the surprisingly tender scene between them later on in the film; the family backstory underpinning why Muriel is the way she is, being the product of her family- "I sent her on a secretarial course" "Useless, you're all useless" ; and especially the character and story arc of Muriel's mother , well written and brilliantly and subtly acted; Rhonda in pain, frustration and despair and Muriel's sincere reaction and explanation of how her life has changed thanks to Rhonda (a scene with three female characters that aces the Bechdel test)
Feelgood happy ending too.

My gran LOVED this movie. I watched it once and couldn’t stop crying. So she’d always say, “Ooo, let’s watch Shadowlands!” My permanent answer: “No!” Now I’ve lost her, I wish I’d watched Shadowlands with her whenever she wanted. Ah, time; it comes for us all and it’s an absolute bellend.

But yes, this is hands-down the weepiest film I’ve seen.

This is Us (although we never finished it as DH got fed up of it making him cry every episode!).
