Need a good cry. What should I watch?

Need to get some emotions out and have a good cry, ideally with a film (or series?) that ends up at least slightly uplifting so that I'm not totally depressed afterwards.
Any suggestions?!
I'll be watching alone so needn't be child-friendly. No other requirements, just needs to let me get a lot of stuck tears out. Thank you!

The notebook

Absolute killer!

Tillow4ever · 30/12/2025 14:26

If you’ve watched Buffy before, I’d watch “The Body” episode or “The Gift” if I need a good cry.

Grey’s Anatomy is always great for a cry too!

Shorter series - Firefly Lane. OMG I sobbed at that one (it’s only 2 seasons).

Films - Someone mentioned the Hunt for the Wildepeople and I second that. Completely forgot about it but I remember how great it ended up being! Also agree with Marley and Me.

A Dog’s Journey had me crying so, so hard but also has a lovely ending. Apparently it’s the sequel to A Dog’s Purpose. I imagine the first will be equally upsetting!

Goodbye Mr Chips with Martin Clunes made me cry the other day.

MrsMcGarry · 30/12/2025 14:31

Imitation of life. Oldie but goodie

Hpwitdo · 30/12/2025 14:32

Steel Magnolias - an oldie but a good one

corlan · 30/12/2025 14:35

Grave of the Fireflies is on Netflix I think. It's heartbreaking 😭

SnowDaysAndBadLays · 30/12/2025 14:38

Life is Beautiful.

Grapejam · 30/12/2025 15:26

It's a sin

You will laugh as much as you cry !

Goodbye June was beautifully done.

It depicts the subject matter really well. Johnny Glynn and Toni Collette are marvellous, as is Helen Mirren.

ZenZazie · 30/12/2025 15:31

Small Things Like These is an amazing film. Also Anxious People (series on Netflix) which is uplifting and emotional but also very funny.

pastabest · 30/12/2025 15:35

This Is Us if you fancy a series.

Such a great story, so many happy and sad elements about families, life, raising children, being teenagers and the changing relationships with aging parents etc. Human flaws.

Had me in absolute floods many times.

ChimpanzeeThatMonkeyNews · 30/12/2025 15:57

I have the coldest black heart, so if a film makes me cry, you know it’s bad.
The ‘Baby Mine’ song in Dumbo just does me in. 😭

The Sade song ‘Right By Your Side’ just kills me.

The railway children

There appears to be a lump in my throat.

Nothing to do with you mentioning The Railway Children, of course!

Goodbye June is absolutely brilliant, DH and I were both sobbing which is absolutely what we needed.

Jugendstiel · 30/12/2025 16:07

Lion. You will need two boxes of tissues. I literally (and I am using the word literally correctly here) soaked my way through five packets of travel tissues when I watched it ona plane. You start sobbing near the start and never stop. Some of it is happy crying.

The saddest film I have ever seen is Manchester By the Sea. Definitely a grown up film. Very low key. It is just about a man who simply can't get over a tragedy. Other people move on but he can't. And the tragic impact it has on someone else is heartbreaking.

Jugendstiel · 30/12/2025 16:08

About Time is a gorgeous film but it is ultimately so happy, it no longer makes me cry. Seen it several times, though. It probably would make you cry the first few times.

Beaches. It's very manipulative at pressing the buttons to make you cry, but it still works.

Sbmpp · 30/12/2025 16:08

An old B&W with Cary Grant: Penny Serenade. Also Imitation of Life (2nd one I think).

About Time

One of my favourite movies!
currwntly watching Erin Brockovich … think that’s a bit of a tear jerker …. Also Steel Magnolias and Terms of endearment

DoAWheelie · 30/12/2025 16:26

The newest Bridget Jones film. Very sad in places but with a happy ending.

This Is Us. Rollercoaster.

I never cry at anything but this got to me on such a level that's very unusual for a TV show. Sometimes I felt like they were saying exactly what I wanted to say. I felt like so much related to me it was freakish but I've heard others say the same. You'll cry but also feel happy.

My heart broke at this

Lelumpolelum · 30/12/2025 17:38

Yesterday’s children with Jane Seymour - it’s on Amazon Prime. Absolute tearjerker.
