How mad is it to go to a London theatre show this afternoon having vomited in the night?

Namechanged as my sister will recognise this and I don't want her to advanced-search my other threads (Hi sis. Love you)

Obviously I wouldn't consider this if I had an infectious vomitting bug but I am pretty sure the cause of me vomitting in the night was the home-made "cured salmon" that my lovely dad made and gave us for brunch yesterday. DH and DC didn't have any as each is either vegetarian or averse to unfamilar foods or both. It was delicious but I started getting really horrible abdominal cramps from 4pm and felt very sorry for myself all evening (took painkillers as period is due and frankly it felt mostly like early labour pains so I thought it might be gynaecological/perimenopause being unpredictable). Woke at 3am with pain all gone but feeling queasy so fetched the Sick Bowl and was soon vomiting quite a lot, then again an hour later. Started feeling much better right away. Went back to sleep and have woken now feeling 100% healthy.

We have tickets for a matinee show in London that I have been wanting to see for years. I bought the tickets back in March and have been looking forward to today all year. How mad would I be to go ahead and embark on a 2hr journey to London, matinee theatre show and 2hr journey home (it's a pretty easy day trip we do it regularly) under these circumstances?

(I will be chatting about this to DSis later to see whether she and her DH have also been ill as they also had the Salmon and if I decide not to go I will offer them the tickets, so want to have mumsnet advice before I have that conversation)

If you feel OK, just go. What happened to the days of just toughing out illnesses? Some people would never go anywhere, judging by this website, and it's ridiculous.

MakeTeaNotWar · 30/12/2025 10:57

Hope you feel better OP. What’s the show?

If loads of other people ate the same and are all fine... I wouldn't jump to assumption it must be the salmon. I'd expect others to be going down with it if it was the salmon

Another one all about ‘me’. And after that… a bit more ‘me’
Try and think outside the box: the bigger picture.
Might help.

If you felt much better after vomitting it sounds like food poisoning.

Why did you get a sick bowl,
You're an adult, being sick into a bowl instead of the toilet is disgusting.

Food posioning can be contiagious so you’re thinking about it being the salmon so you can still go isn’t logical.

Totally agree. Why do people always say this. A big cause of food poisoning is norovirus - the CDC cites it as the leading cause of foodborne illness in America.

And other food poisoning bacteria can be passed on as well.

Don’t be silly. I felt quite sick last night, and grabbed the sick bowl. It wasn’t with the aim of vomiting into it, it was to have near me in bed just in case I woke up needing to be sick right then. A better safe than sorry strategy, it just makes me feel better to have it on hand.
Wasn’t sick in the end, but have some sort of bug.

What random nonsense is this?

How very nice and blessed your life must be that you haven't yet found out that some people don't have the speed and agility to get from lying horizontal in bed to get down the corridor to the bathroom in the time it takes to realise the sick is actually going to happen, nor spent long periods in ambiguous queasiness that sometimes never resolves into actual sickness such that hanging out in the bathroom at 3am would be stupid. May your life forever be so blessed so you never have to learn the hard way not to judge.

May they be cursed by the 'duvet wrapping itself round your leg, trapped in the bed, pull a muscle wrenching it out, sick up all over the laminate floor, slip in that and pull a muscle on the other leg' experience.

They'll be praying for a sick bucket, mark my words.

So you had salmon yesterday lunchtime, started feeling rough 4 hours later, then went to bed and felt sick and you then were sick, I would say it was the salmon and your body getting rid of it, which is better than waiting for the diarrhoea to start which is what I get when I’ve had food poisoning. It might just be the salmon was very strong and didn’t agree with you, rather than actual poisoning.

Could you have a mild allergy to salmon? I have a mild allergy to tuna/salmon which only surfaces if I drink alcohol. Did you drink alcohol at all that day?

Sometimes it's a safety net in case they can't get to the toilet in time or someone else may be on the toilet. You can't hold it in..... It's not in your house so why do you care? You've brought absolutely nothing to the conversation table with that comment, and the topic has gone over your head
