Foreign medics shunning NHS because of anti-migrant rhetoric, says top doctor | NHS | The Guardian

Foreign-born doctors and nurses were being put off by antagonism by politicians towards migrants, media coverage of immigration, the racist abuse of international medical graduates by NHS colleagues and racist aggression by patients toward minority ethnic NHS staff, she said.

We rely on them. I'd be dead if it weren't for foreign medical staff (cancer).

Talk about an own goal.

I wouldn't believe what the guardian says about anything anymore to be honest.

nhs was shown to be racist in covid times
this is nothing new

I wouldn't blame them, I wouldn't go to work in a country where I thought it likely I would be subject to racial abuse. There are lots of other places to go if you can't work in your own country.

But the world seems to be getting more xenophobic in general. I don't know if it's an underlying fear that the world is getting overcrowded and that climate change will cause mass migrations, so people have to protect what they have, all stirred up by social media of course and not helped by Trump.

Not entirely sure I'd agree - I'm in Bournemouth hospital resus right now- it's a very international team on duty and they have been delightful all night.

Our local GP surgery has had issues with patients being racist towards staff. So much so that they had an article about it affecting being able to get GPs to stay as both they and their families were subject to racist abuse. Very middle class area in the southeast.

I found it shocking.

They need to have a word with the BMA then. They've been stirring up antagonism towards furrin doctors taking all the jobs for years. It's why the (white, posh, entitled, UK trained) residents are always on strike.

Some patients are racist, sure. But so are a helluva lot of doctors.

They are not "saying it". It's an article that cites sources.

The NHS would literally implode (even more than it is) if all their immigrant staff left, it’s totally dependent on them. But yes racism is getting worse in general so NHS staff will obviously be noticing it more. And I very much blame the media and politicians for constantly stirring it up and encouraging it. My dh is a Dr and an immigrant, he finds the constant anti immigrant rhetoric really upsetting.

Beat me to it. Frankly, it's getting close to being a "progressive" Daily Mail if you can conceive of such a thing.

I've been reading it for years - hard copy and on-line - and if they introduce a paywall, I'm not sure I'd bother to continue.
