How much money to put in a kid's birthday card?

It's a friend's child's birthday - she turned 11 and instead of a present I was going to give her some money. How much would you give?

Depends. What would you spend on a present for the child? And what can you afford? They would guide me.

TenderChicken · 29/12/2025 12:15

My kids get money from their great aunt in a card, she sends £10-15 and they're always very pleased to add it to their allowance and spend it. Kids are 8 and turning 10.

I was thinking of putting in £20 but not sure if that's too little.

I think £20 is very generous.
I was going to suggest £5 to £10.

SkinnyOatFlatWhiteForMePlease · 29/12/2025 12:26

I would do £20.

reluctantbrit · 29/12/2025 12:27

My best friend's DD got £20-ish, 16th and 18th birthday were a bit higher.

A school friend got £10

Jinglejells · 29/12/2025 12:27

I would do £25. You can’t even get much decent for less than that.

stichguru · 29/12/2025 12:28

£20 is not too little at all. £10 would be fine £20 is generous.

Alexadidzammomarryjackie · 29/12/2025 12:28

I do £20.

MrsTerryPratchett · 29/12/2025 12:30

DD 15 just got 20 in a card and I thought that was (just) overly generous. Much appreciated but 10 would have been too!

EchoedSilence · 29/12/2025 12:30

£5 - £10. I wouldn't give a friends child any more than that.

isthesolution · 29/12/2025 12:30

we gave Childs friends £20 this year. They turned 11.

Bji6gh · 29/12/2025 12:31

She is my best mate. Usually we do actual presents for kids but it's been manic at our end so cash will do. But I've never given cash before so not sure how much is right amount

£20 for children that I’m not related to and aren’t my godchildren.
