Talk to me if you stream your TV through a Firestick

BBC iPlayer, Netflix and YouTube work absolutely normally no bother

Channel 4, Disney and ITV X all they do is buffer and hang and I have to restart the stick.

They often say my internet is offline when it very much is working in general and on other apps.

Is it just affecting me or are these apps just generally crap?

Mine was like this, then I did research and realised it was because mine was no longer being properly supported (was bought in 2017). I replaced it recently and it is working like a dream now.

I don't know about iplayer because I don't have a tv license but yeah now you mention it CH4 catch up in particular does seem to freeze/buffer all the time. I haven't noticed a problem with disney though. I wonder if it's something to do with ads disrupting the flow/load - but then youtube has ads too?

Tryagain26 · 28/12/2025 16:44

I have a fire stick and I can get all the steaming services fine using it. Including itvx, Disney and channel 4 . However I can't get them on my smart TV as it is an old one. Could it be that your fire stick needs updating?

I have this issue with Disney, channel 4 & itv - I also wondered if it was to do with ads 🤔

I probably do need to get a new one but I resent it as it will be my third.

Mine does the same. Lots and lots of buffering (I originally wrote buggering, same thing) on iPlayer, Channel 4, to the extent that I can usually only watch about ten minutes of any programme before it freezes. Netflix, Prime, YouTube etc all absolutely fine. New(ish, one year old) Firestick.

MarxistMags · 28/12/2025 16:46

It only happens rarely with us that we have to restart. Usually when we have rewound. It's only 2, or maybe 3 years old. Do not problem with the apps.

EineReiseDurchDieZeit · 28/12/2025 16:49

Yes it could be the breaks for adverts affecting ITVX and C4, but Disney shouldn’t be the nightmare to load that it is.

We have a Fire TV and have been having problems recently - a lot of restarting! Main issues have been with Disney and Prime Video (Prime Video has been awful in particular). Netflix, iplayer and Apple TV have been ok, but the whole interface feels very laggy and slow.

EineReiseDurchDieZeit · 28/12/2025 16:52

@carbonelthecat I forgot to list Prime. Also crap and particularly on items you’ve bought and paid for

ITVX is awful for me sometimes!

I also have a fire TV and I'm having similar issues. Prime video is awful, constant buffering, ITVx also not great but not as bad as Prime.
Netflix is fine though.

Madcats · 28/12/2025 17:14

We mainly access iPlayer, Prime and Apple Tv via a Firestick (don’t think we’ve bought a new one for a good decade). We have a fairly hefty fibre internet speed.

It seemed a bit laggy this Christmas, which we attributed to twice as many people wanting to watch on demand. Removing the stick and plugging it back in seems to have fixed it for now.

boys3 · 28/12/2025 17:15

Our fire stick is quite a few years old now, however, touch wood, no problems. At least not anything noticeable and we have too many several streaming platforms.

Same here, had problems, kept blaming internet but it was years old and the new one is amazing (and great deal on amazon)

Makemeanonymous · 28/12/2025 17:29

I generally only watch STV player, Now tv sports and BBCi player and very occasionally Prime and I don't generally have a problem.
Very occasionally the Internet drops out and causes a problem but this is quite rare - I pay for the fastest Internet speed because when I ditched Virgin a couple of years ago in favour of the Firestick and BT broadband I wanted to try and forstall any problems.

We had this as well, and just bought a new one. Problem sorted.

Thanks everyone, guess I have to get a new one!

I use a Roku box and have no problems at all with any of the TV apps.

Toddlerteaplease · 28/12/2025 22:29

I had issues mainly with Channel 5. Occasionally ITV and 4 but not often. Mine is probably out of date as well. Though recently changed to Sky so not using it anymore.
