Velvet sofa.... yay or nay?

Those of you with a velvet sofa, please talk to me about your velvet sofa!

Even though they feel amazing, I had discounted velvet as I thought it was going to be too delicate but the saleswoman said that is actually not the case. I'm not 100% in love with the velvet colour range but I can't get past how lush the fabric feels so I'm thinking of going for it.

So please share your experience. Do you love or hate it? Are they family friendly and fairly hard wearing? Will a cat simply walking along it damage it? Is velvet going to date terribly and me in 2 years time will resent myself for buying something faddy?

I'm crap and indecisive at all big purchases but sofa shopping especially sucks.

Mine is modern fabric with stain resistant stuff on it so it's not the horror I fearered it might be. They are nice to feel.

Buscobel · 27/12/2025 22:52

Depends where you buy it from.

EeewDavid12 · 27/12/2025 22:54

same as @ManyATrueWord mine is modern with a stain resistant coating. it’s had all sorts on it from 2 small children and still looks good. just make sure the colour you get doesn’t have that 2010s TOWIE sheen to it. like a crushed velvet silver!

Mine is some kind of stain resistant smart velvet. I've it for 2 years so far and it's been absolutely fine.

TerrierCharmer · 27/12/2025 23:00

I have a blush pink one. I loved it so I got it, but I thought it would be murder to keep clean. It’s actually been fine, and I have a frequently muddy dog to contend with!

youalright · 27/12/2025 23:04

Absolutely not but then I can't stand the feel of velvet it makes me feel weird.

imcountingtothree123 · 27/12/2025 23:06

Love mine from sofa.com. Navy blue and wipes clean so easily. That’s with three kids.

HeBeaverandSheBeaver · 27/12/2025 23:10

Brill. Mines from M&S I think or John Lewis. I can't remember. Anyway it has a fabric that can be washed hard. I've split chocolate coffee etc in it. All good. Come out fine

Also have 3 cats that love it and easy to get hairs off with a scraper tool or I hoover it with upholstery tool. I draw the line at the dog tho. He is only allowed on the 18 yo old leather sofa

Makemeanonymous · 27/12/2025 23:13

I just bought a velvet sofa last month.
It's not an expensive one - just from Habitat. But I'm really pleased with it . Extremely comfortable and the velvet is lovely to the touch.

ProseccoPie · 27/12/2025 23:17

I love mine. It has had everything spilt on it. The covers go in the washing machine and tumble dryer. It’s eight years old, still looks like new

BasiliskStare · 27/12/2025 23:18

I would say if you like it , do it , but just make sure the velvet is cleanable ( whether that be yourself or every so often professional cleaners. ) It's not just the occasional spill , muddy paws etc but also the general use on the arms etc . Apart from that I think the crushed shiny velvet looks a bit dated but normal velvet I think would be lovely.

edit spelling

We have a velvet sofa that still looks new five years on. I love how rich colours are in velvet, and love the texture though I know some people hate it.

user1471284740 · 27/12/2025 23:20

I've owned mine for 7 years, it still looks like new. I can remove the seat covers and put them through the washing machine. It was from made.com

ChuffingNoraah · 27/12/2025 23:23

We have very expensive non-stain protected cotton velvet from Duresta which we’ve had for about 15 years and has been ABSOLUTELY battered and still looks acceptable, and would be even better if I found the willpower to take all the covers off and wash them properly which hasn’t been done in a wee while. I found after a child threw up on them once that they are actually fine to chuck in the machine and hang out to dry.

We also have a Loaf clever velvet which is bombproof - light colour, again has had all sorts chucked on it and always comes out with Vanish spray and a hot cloth.

EricTheGardener · 27/12/2025 23:26

Velvet's actually fine with cats (I've got three) as they can't get their claws into it and shred it the same way they can with, say, linen or tweed. So it's pretty hardwearing in that respect. I have found it has faded in the sun though.

ShakespearesSisters · 27/12/2025 23:30

I have moved onto velvet. My latest cats seem very insistent on using the furniture as scratching posts. Totally trashed my leather sofa. It now has a cover. And my ikea tub chairs were covered in snags. I've bought velvet stretched covers for them and they are holding up really well. My velvet sofa is 5 yrs old and still looking good and I have some velvet cocktail chairs.
Looking for a recliner sofa now and it will definitely be velvet.

MotherOfCrocodiles · 27/12/2025 23:34

Had a secondhand one for about 20 years and then gave it to a friend who has it five years later and it still looks totally fine. Will definitely buy velvet next time.

LadyGAgain · 27/12/2025 23:37

We have 2 loaf sofas. They are SHIT. Awful quality. Awful comfort - literally the worst sofa I’ve ever endured. And the velvet stains and you can’t get anything off.

Raindancer101 · 28/12/2025 12:49

Thank you so much. Looks like I'm going for it and ordering velvet! 😄

mondaytosunday · 28/12/2025 12:51

Yes but it’s not velvet but upholstery velvet. It has withstood two dogs and two cats well (they don’t claw at it).

imcountingtothree123 · 08/02/2026 19:42

Outs Is brilliant from sofa.com with smart fabrics, it’s a dark colour but also have a chair in a lighter colour, both just wipe clean really easily even with three kids!

Katieweasel · 08/02/2026 20:38

Love mine and it is easy to clean but it does seem to attract dust so I hoover it every day

Squirrelchops1 · 08/02/2026 20:41

We bought a burnt orange velvet sofa from Habitat. Initially I got paranoid about every mark or spill but it's more robust than you think.
