Neighbours complaining about reindeer food

Elder dc bought a bag of porridge on Xmas Eve to mix with glitter with their younger siblings and put out for the “reindeer”
As dc do on Xmas Eve they got carried away and as well as putting the food in our front garden they sprinkled it on the public road.
A neighbour who we do not know by name but to smile at had posted on the local FB page complaining about the mess which went over our heads but he then confronted dh in the street today when he was getting in his car.
Because of the old dry weather the porridge is still laying in the street.
Dh being his usual non diplomatic self wasn’t exactly friendly towards neighbour.
Ive no intentions of going out with a brush and shovel for what is a few handfuls of oats and it’s to rain in the next few days anyway but am wondering if this is something that others would be upset about in their street?

Depends how much it is. A whole bag of oats? Sounds messy.

mainly, though, was it edible glitter? If not, yabvu as it’s bad for the wildlife.

SweeetFannyAdams · 26/12/2025 23:47

I'm not sure if you're deliberately trying to get MNetters frothing, but I'll give you the benefit of the doubt and ask why you can't be arsed to quickly sweep up the mess?

fashionqueen0123 · 26/12/2025 23:47

We do the same and I can imagine one particular neighbour being exactly like this. No one else would be though, our street has lots of young children. And a few grumpy older nosy people!
We just put it on our front lawn and I try to avoid the pavement only because I don’t want the kids asking why it’s not been eaten the next day!

popupandsayhi · 26/12/2025 23:47

Your mess so clean it up. Not that difficult

MangerThings · 26/12/2025 23:48

Your neighbour needs a strong ignore and swerve.

ohfourfoxache · 26/12/2025 23:49

It’s not great tbh - I would be really annoyed with the glitter (unless it’s degradable)

RabbitsEatPancakes · 26/12/2025 23:50

What do you think rain will do to oats on a pavement- it won't make them disappear will it?

Get out and clean up your mess.

wasteful26 · 26/12/2025 23:50

Dc didn’t go into the street they were sprinkling/throwing around the garden so anything over the fence is “overspill”

OP posts:
Doteycat · 26/12/2025 23:50

I dont think the kids putting it there would bug me.
But their lazy ass cldnt give a shit parent who couldn't be arsed cleaning up and having some consideration would bug me as would the ignorant dh who sounds just as bad.

WearyAuldWumman · 26/12/2025 23:51

I believe that wildlife organisations are now asking people not to use this 'reindeer food' since the glitter can actually kill creatures that ingest it - so yes, I'd object to this being in a public space.

Illbefinejustbloodyfine · 26/12/2025 23:51

Get some chickens. Ours cleaned up the reindeer food very quickly!

My DC used oats, pine nuts, dried cranberries, some christmss 'sprinkles" and chia seeds

Yeah but why can't you be arsed to quickly sweep up the mess?

ToKittyornottoKitty · 26/12/2025 23:51

Why wouldn’t you just sweep it up?

CraftyGin · 26/12/2025 23:51

If the oats and glitter is still out there, does that mean that Santa didn't visit?

Vanillalime · 26/12/2025 23:51

It would take less than 2 minutes to grab a broom & sweep it up. Can’t you send your eldest out to do it?

SparklingCrow · 26/12/2025 23:52

Your mess - you sweep it up 🤷‍♀️. That’ll be a right claggy gloop when it rains. And maybe stop being rude to your neighbours when it’s you who’ve made the mess. You may need their assistance one day.

I hope to goodness that was edible glitter.

Trallers · 26/12/2025 23:52

Hard to tell how much mess you're talking about so it's also hard to tell if neighbour is being ott or fair. If there's any doubt, probably best to just clean it up.

cadburyegg · 26/12/2025 23:52

How much of it is there? It must be a lot if someone is complaining about it. I don’t understand why it has to go on a public road. “Reindeer food” should just be a small amount scattered in a back garden.

murasaki · 26/12/2025 23:52

Sweep up anything outside your boundary you lazy baggage. It can kill wildlife and is ugly.

The OP should get some chickens and let them roam around the pavement?

Yeah, that's better than quickly grabbing a broom 👀😁

Bourneyesterday · 26/12/2025 23:52

You'll attract rats and mice as well by scattering did on the ground though the glitter is apparently really bad for them.

cocoloco12 · 26/12/2025 23:53

I am genuinely shocked your neighbour took the time on Christmas Day to complain about porridge oats on a fb page 😂 especially a few handfuls! Some people have very little to be at.
I hope your neighbour tackles those who don't clean up after their dogs!

OccasionalHope · 26/12/2025 23:54

I'd be concerned about encouraging rats, and about birds being poisoned by the glitter.

MyThreeWords · 26/12/2025 23:55

Sprinkling porridge and glitter everywhere seems like a stupid thing to do. Why do people have to keep on inventing new add-ons to the already OTT festival of Christmas tat?.

If it was real glitter and not some eco-substitute you have probably inflicted long-lasting litter in your neighbourhood.

If I was your neighbour, wouldn't have bothered to complain, but I would be thinking of you as daft and annoying.

Roobarbtwo · 26/12/2025 23:57

Wouldn't bother me apart from potential issues re wildlife
