Neighbours complaining about reindeer food

Elder dc bought a bag of porridge on Xmas Eve to mix with glitter with their younger siblings and put out for the “reindeer”
As dc do on Xmas Eve they got carried away and as well as putting the food in our front garden they sprinkled it on the public road.
A neighbour who we do not know by name but to smile at had posted on the local FB page complaining about the mess which went over our heads but he then confronted dh in the street today when he was getting in his car.
Because of the old dry weather the porridge is still laying in the street.
Dh being his usual non diplomatic self wasn’t exactly friendly towards neighbour.
Ive no intentions of going out with a brush and shovel for what is a few handfuls of oats and it’s to rain in the next few days anyway but am wondering if this is something that others would be upset about in their street?

Since when did reindeers eat glitter? Horrible idea and if one if my neighbours this Id complain too. They wouldn't though, as my neighbours are considerate.

Pineapplewaves · 27/12/2025 01:32

Did you use edible glitter? If not you should get outside and clean up the mess you made as it’s going to be there for ages.

Kokonimater · 27/12/2025 01:37

Oh dear. You don’t sound very nice. Neither does your husband. And mixing porridge with glitter? Do you care about anything??

mmsnets · 27/12/2025 01:39

MyCrushWithEyeliner · 27/12/2025 01:04

Stop being a lazy fucker and clean it up

this

clean it up you lazy arse

VoltaireMittyDream · 27/12/2025 01:46

Just clean it up fgs. And your ‘non-diplomatic’ husband needs to grow up and be polite to his neighbours.

RafaFan · 27/12/2025 01:50

Maybe the neighbour objects to the vermin attractant spread around the neighbourhood, and potential harm to the environment from the glitter.

Topseyt123 · 27/12/2025 01:51

You need to sweep it up. It's litter, even if the glitter is edible. Edible glitter can still poison wildlife. Rain will not necessarily just wash it cleanly away. Porridge oats will go thick and clumpy when wet.

Also, food left lying around outside will soon attract rats. You and/or your very rude husband need to sweep it up and stop being arses.

Roobarbtwo · 27/12/2025 01:54

I can't get my head around this - reindeer? Since when did people spread oats and glitter for reindeer? Suffering fuck.

I get foxes in my garden and this glitter would harm them if they tried to eat the oats.

I think the neighbours should have spoken to you but youre wrong

Namechangerage · 27/12/2025 01:14

No. I created plenty of magical moments for my kids without spreading porridge oats on a public path and glitter which harms local wildlife. It’s not hard to avoid this shit, there are so many other things you can do.

Magical moments ❤️

So because there is mess in a big city, that gives carte blanche to deliberately add to it and harm wildlife further?
Wow.
I wonder if you're one of those people who throw rubbish in the street muttering it keeps street cleaners employed.

I loathe fly tipping and fly tippers. And I make an effort not to litter at all. Having said that, we're talking about a bit of porridge that will wash away at the first shower.

When I lived in London yes it probably would bother me as the rats and pigeons would be throwing a party

I love pigeons and I feed them daily. They aren't the enemy

Sprinkling porridge and glitter everywhere seems like a stupid thing to do. Why do people have to keep on inventing new add-ons to the already OTT festival of Christmas tat?.

If it was real glitter and not some eco-substitute you have probably inflicted long-lasting litter in your neighbourhood.

If I was your neighbour, wouldn't have bothered to complain, but I would be thinking of you as daft and annoying.

My kids made some at a Xmas event but it went into a tiny bag and was kept on our Christmas Eve plate…sprinkling it around outside seems messy and weird. I’d also be concerned about encouraging vermin.

DarkLion · 27/12/2025 03:47

I think it’s a bit trampy yes I’m not surprised your neighbour is pissed. Wet porridge oats are awful and aren’t going to dissapear attracting vermin and glitter is toxic to birds and other wildlife. Just because it was overflow as you put it beyond your boundary doesn’t make it ok and to admit you’re not going to clean it up isnt helping your case

Troublein · 27/12/2025 03:56

Your children threw food and glitter all over the public road and you think you shouldn't bother to clean it up?

It's not cute, it's nothing to do with Christmas and it's disgusting.

You think it's okay for your kids to throw rubbish around and leave the mess for someone else to deal with, risking harming wild animals and polluting the environment with glitter.

They didn't get carried away, you have taught them to care for nothing but themselves.

Go clean it up and teach your children not to litter.

LiveLuvLaugh · 27/12/2025 03:57

I’m glad you’re not my neighbours.

DahlsChickenz · 27/12/2025 04:14

I'd go and sweep it up, not least because otherwise you will attract rats.

Was it edible glitter? If not YABVU for your ecological crimes.

wandawaves · 27/12/2025 04:15

Weird.

  1. What happened to just leaving a carrot or two?
  2. Since when do reindeer eat glitter? They're not unicorns you know.
  3. Why on earth did your kids need to throw it everywhere? Wouldn't it be more thoughtful for the reindeer to put it in a bowl?
SatsumaDog · 27/12/2025 04:33

You should clean it up. That said, I wouldn’t complain to my neighbour about it. If someone is happy to leave a mess like that, they aren’t likely to be receptive to a request to clean it up.

spottybaghottyhag · 27/12/2025 04:45

I'm usually a very live and let live person and wanting the DC to soak in the magic etc, but the thought of buying a bag of oats to throw around the garden/street feels incredibly wasteful and unnecessary. Also if someone told me as a child to mix glitter in with the reindeer food I'd be genuinely perplexed, even young kids know glitter isn't edible? When did this become a thing?

MarshaMarshaMarsha · 27/12/2025 05:03

It’s clearly not edible glitter as the OP has ignored the question.

I’ve seen so many posts in the last few days that really demonstrate why our country is going down the pan. Just absolutely no consideration and thought for anything beyond people’s own selfishness and “we’re alright jack” attitudes.

And yes some of you (who clearly have the same mindset of the OP) may say “it’s only a bit of glitter” but tell that to the poor birds and other wildlife choking on it or to the neighbours that have to look at the sludgy oaty mess. Just clean it up FFS. Embarrassing.

Tolkienista · 27/12/2025 05:06

OP, get a dustpan and brush sweep up the offending glitter and remainder of the oats before it rains and becomes a gloopy mess.
Job sorted.

Ritasueandbobtoo9 · 27/12/2025 05:15

Why would you sprinkle toxic plastic or foil outside? Reindeers don’t eat plastic.

ChocolateCinderToffee · 27/12/2025 05:18

I don’t blame your neighbour. This will attract rats.
