Can I get the pill without a prescription?

We’re away at the moment and DD has forgotten to bring her contraceptive pills- needs to take them from tomorrow.

Will a pharmacist be able to give her a pack without prescription?

Yes.

Chonk · 26/12/2025 19:47

Where are you?

Mmmcheese89 · 26/12/2025 19:48

It depends on the type. Some are now available over the counter. If you're away but still in the UK call 111 for emergency prescription.

Thanks all. I’m in England and it’s microgynon.

I do know Boots can prescribe them. Also, a pharmacy will usually give you a month's worth in case of emergency. I think you have to phone 111 to arrange it.

I have had to get emergency medication before. If you go to a pharmacy and your daughter can show her GP app or NHS app with her repeat medications on it this will normally be sufficient for them to issue a small amount as an emergency dose until she gets home.

Just Google emergency prescription service and follow the link to the relevant page on the NHS website and then follow the link. You might need to also google which pharmacies near you are open tomorrow so you know which pharmacy to suggest.
I had to do it with my HRT over Easter and was amazed at how efficient it was

I was started on that medication by a pharmacist. They can also provide if you’re already on it by looking it up

on Monday I went into a pharmacy and they took me into the private room, took my BP and gave me 6 months worth

ManyPigeons · 26/12/2025 21:56

Yep. Just go to Boots. I did it the other day. It’s free too.

They don’t even need to do that. Contraception services are offered at the pharmacy now - for free they can prescribe or dispense up to 6 months of the pill.

The thing I needed was not contraception. Great to hear that it's easier for that!
