The dressing gown of doom has seen me through a lot, its comforted me in a lot of sickness. Its tatty, old and no where near being anything decent now. Ive been making a conscious effort to slowly replace anything old and tatty (most of my wardrobe!).

How can I bear to part with it ?? I want to but not sure I can ..

There's an argument for keeping a spare to use when the other one needs washing. I always have two - the current one and the last one. By the time the current one needs replacing I am happy to part with the spare.

How old are we talking I'm intrigued to know! I've had mine since 2008 but it's still going strong!

Ilovemychocolate · 26/12/2025 09:53

Everyone needs at least two dressing gowns though!
😆

One of the things I inherited when I bought my current house was a fitment on my bedroom door which has 5 pegs. Amd it's brilliant because it means I have 4 dressing gowns hanging there. Differing ages and differing weights for different times of the year.

So if I had your dilemma the solution would be easy. My old , much loved dressing gown would be allocated the 5th peg. And I'm sure i would find some occasion when it would be the right day to wear it.

I have two dressing gowns, just saying!

DisplayPurposesOnly · 26/12/2025 10:00

Tatty means it's time to go. Keep a piece (frame it, or make a cushion) but into the fabric recycling it goes.

Pineapplewaves · 26/12/2025 10:03

I have three dressing gowns, my “dressing gown of doom” which I live in, a really nice one that I will put on should anyone drop by unannounced or if DP is filming (on Christmas morning when DC are opening their stockings at 6 am for example) and one for the wash. You can never have too many!

sittingonabeach · 26/12/2025 10:04

Make something sentimental out of it

GentleSheep · 26/12/2025 10:05

I say keep a piece of it and make that into something, depending on what the fabric is.

Newyearsameme26 · 26/12/2025 10:09

I managed to part with mine early this year but can't find a good enough replacement as my standards are so high for it 😂. Ive been wearing dh's tired old thing. Weird isn't it??

Astra53 · 26/12/2025 10:10

I would not part with the dressing gown of doom. Put it on part time hours and give it a well deserved rest. Save it for sick days and when you need a comforting friend.

Brightbluesomething · 26/12/2025 10:37

I’m currently wearing my favourite ever dressing gown that I bought for myself last Christmas. But I still keep the previous one as it’s lighter for the summer. You can keep or throw yours as you wish. You’re an adult and it’s your choice, you don’t need permission.

Gingernaut · 26/12/2025 10:47

If it's still wearable, rotate it with the new dressing gown

If it's not wearable, you even say it's not in a decent condition, cut it up for dusters or make a cuddly cushion cover out of it

WildflowerHope · 26/12/2025 10:55

You will need a spare for a spa day or hospital. I regret getting rid of my dressing gown of doom.

BerryTwister · 26/12/2025 11:00

I’m really bad at getting rid of old things when I’ve got a new replacement. So I tend to use both of them for a while, until I gradually bond with the new thing, and feel ready to let the old one go.

Davros · 26/12/2025 11:42

Bin it. Don’t think twice. Appreciate the new one all the more as it’s doing a good job of replacing old favourite

statetrooperstacey · 26/12/2025 19:29

Keep it as a symbol of illness for the rest of the house and fake tan and hair dye days .

PlazaAthenee · 26/12/2025 19:42

Give it to an animal rescue?
