Is it frozen or fresh?

Get it out of the fridge an hour before cooking and let it rest for an hour wrapped in foil and towel before carving.

Happy Christmas!

Agree with pp - bring it out in a cool room an hour before cooking. Take out a few slices of butter too, as you’ll want to smear this on to help keep it moist (unless you prefer oil or bacon).

Don’t forget to take the foil off to brown about 30 mins before end of cooking time.

Use a snug oven dish so moisture doesn’t evaporate too easily - or if your tray is large you can add a splash of water to the bottom

If you’re stuffing it and/or shoving other things in the oven, don’t forget that slows down the cooking time.

If you allow 45 mins to one hour resting time, you can then whack the over temp up and cook the spuds and ang extra stuffing or parsnips. Also if the turkey “overruns” its cooking time and you left a whole hour to rest, it will still give you a bit of time in hand to let it finish cooking.

Oh gosh I’m pleased I read this thread. I’m sure my instructions don’t mention foil & I should know as I’ve bought turkey foil before (when I was shopping for Xmas but not cooking) but didn’t think!

I’ve got alarms set but wondering if I need to start a little earlier as I was going to start my roast potatoes in the same oven. I’ve never worried about that with a chicken and it is just an 8 person crown so maybe not so much of an issue?

GameOfJones · 25/12/2025 07:04

The instructions on mine say oven at 180c and then cook it for 40 mins per kg of weight plus an hour. Butter on skin and foil over the top then take the foil off for the last hour.

It’s fresh, and got it from Morrisons ! We’ve just moved house literally a week ago so I haven’t given Xmas much thought this year 🤦‍♀️
It is quite large, 10-12 person serving. So do I go with bacon or butter, what’s best ?!

Definitely butter and then bacon on the top if you prefer. Cook it first and then when it's out wrap it up well and cook the potatoes and everything else up for the last hour. The turkey will be better for resting and can easily be left for up to two hours wrapped up so you have plenty of time to do everything else.

Are there no cooking instructions on the pack? Mine says cook for 3 hours on 180°c but mine serves 8 so smaller than yours. I’m cooking stuffing and pigs in blankets separate so not putting anything on mine.
