I hate Christmas.

Blueuggboots · 24/12/2025 22:44

Every year, it just makes me unfathomably angry.
I hate all the fuss, I hate turkey, I hate sprouts. I hate that people eat them just because “that’s what you do”.
I hate having to spend time with people I don’t really want to spend time with and pretend it’s all lovely.
I hate so many Christmas songs especially when people “put a spin” on them. Silent night is a really depressing song and it doesn’t matter how you sing it, it’s still depressing.
I’m going away next year to avoid it.

Mmm. It’s the time of year when as humans we celebrate the best in each other.
Honestly you sound fed up with life in general. Make 2026 the year you kick the arse out of it:

MumChp · 24/12/2025 22:54

I live Christmas but hate all the fuss. Count me in.

SatsumaCandlesCloves · 24/12/2025 22:54

We don't have sprouts or turkey!
We have everything we like and do what we like.

molifly · 24/12/2025 22:58

I like the feeling of Christmas. I like to take time to give thanks to people and the concept of sitting inside eating celebrations and watching what ever you want on tv. I like the fact that most of the UK stops for the day and enjoys each other. I don't enjoy the stress and the pressure.

PTSDBarbiegirl · 24/12/2025 23:00

That’s why I’m not seeing any family on Christmas Day. I’ve found it a deeply upsetting emotional turmoil for 40 odd years! I bloody hate the hype and I hate that I’ve felt like I failed on all the occasions I tried to make it all beautiful for my family. I did do that but every time involved total overwhelm and meltdown from me. I see my family for get togethers in the run up days and then speak on the phone. I don’t eat anything I don’t like and I don’t see anyone I find upsetting. If that sounds crap fuck it. My sanity comes first.

Oscarcatmum · 24/12/2025 23:03

Oh, I feel you! All the fuss, all the expectations, all the pressure I put on myself! I don't really like my extended family, id far rather spend Christmas with friends. I do it for the children, but now they're teenagers I think we might be able to escape the whole silly charade next year! Where to go to get away from it all ?

AnneLovesGilbert · 24/12/2025 23:08

I haven’t had a sprout in years and I’ve never eaten turkey. I like the traditions though, we don’t have that many cultural rituals in this country and they’re important to a lot of people. It’ll be over soon. I hope you have a lovely 2026.

Blueuggboots · 24/12/2025 23:09

I only have 4 days off next year and we have a total leave ban (I’m working this year so can sort of avoid most of it) and we’re going to hire a cottage and slob and eat cheese. I’ve already got a shortlist of cottages!!

MIL lives with us and she insists on turkey and sprouts but does cook me beef if I’m at home but it’s just all the fuss. I just want to say bollocks to it.

I am a normal, happy, well adjusted person with a lovely family and I still fucking hate it. It’s such a pointless waste of time and money. I’d rather be at work / on holiday if I had more money. I hate every single thing about it.

Solidarity, Xmas haters!

I don't see that at all.

SleepingStandingUp · 24/12/2025 23:50

wdo you only have 4 days leave next year? surely that can't be legal

narcASD · 24/12/2025 23:51

I don’t mind it but I’m very chilled about it all, I don’t get sucked up into the hype, I buy food I like including sprouts, I don’t feel pressured to do teacher or work collections, send cards or buy gifts for people I don’t like or care about.

I also always have 2 weeks off at Christmas and my kids love it, I do look forward to it being over with though, my dad is the worlds worst Christmas hater, he put me off following suit!

Silvertulips · 24/12/2025 23:53

Then find things you do like and do those instead!!

I don’t buy sprouts, or gifts for people I don’t like!!

I enjoy the panto, I like meeting friends for a catch up

I go to the parties I want to go to.

You do have choices!

WonderfulSmith · 24/12/2025 23:55

I’m just bored of it. I don’t really have a family so perhaps I would feel differently if I did. Me and DH go to friends which is quite fun but I’m just bored of all the songs and iconography.

SouthernNights59 · 24/12/2025 23:59

It's quite eye opening how many miserable gits there are on MN!

Handeyethingyowl · 25/12/2025 00:01

I am on the fence as I dread it and it overwhelms me getting organised, then I never mind it on the day. My favourite is Christmas Eve. I don’t eat turkey but I do like a sprout. I have to pace myself with everything in December or I burn out. I sometimes think I’d like to get away but I think I’d get bored not seeing anyone. Also going away is also a lot of work and I’d rather save my holiday money for anothet time.

BlackCatFanClub · 25/12/2025 00:04

I think people should say they don’t like it and then do other stuff instead. Eat what you want, have the day you want. The only reason you might not is if you have children, if you are an adult then crack on.
I love Christmas dinner. DD eats something else . All fine.

Screamingabdabz · 25/12/2025 00:06

I bloody love sprouts. So do the rest of my family. (How are people cooking them that they’re so hated?)

But people make far too much of Christmas. I say that as a Christian and someone who does all the traditional things. It’s one day. It’s shouldn't cause that much angst.

Definitely rewrite the rules next year for your own sanity. 💐

You’re beyond late to the party and didn’t need this thread to realise this. Sincerely, a proud miserable git 🤘

I Iove Christmas but I don't like a lot of the excess. I don't mean people buying lots of gifts actually, but more the endless performative aspects of it. The mania, the endless photos, the expense of basic things, the pressure on mainly women and mothers who don't get a fraction of their effort back, the need for everything to be BIG and BETTER. Its tiring.

It's not just one day for a lot of people though is it ? It becomes almost a full week for us but I do mostly love it fortunately. The pressure beforehand is hard but I'm fine once it's here

Topseyt123 · 25/12/2025 02:00

I love sprouts. Not bothered about turkey and three out of five in this house are vegetarian anyway.

I do enjoy Christmas Day with my family, but I am also relieved when it is over and things can go back to normal.

Not a wonder when it's on the women to fix the whole Christmas shebang running themselves ragged.
