Theatre/musicals are a much more niche interest than popular music - the clue is in the latter genre's name. How many radio stations around the world play popular music 24/7 and how many play songs from the musicals around the clock?

Thanks; that's kind of confirmed it to me personally, though, as I'd forgotten that Elton had done musicals as well as the decades of pop music!

And even the musicals that he's collaborated in the writing of have been much more popularist ones than Andrew's.

Interestingly, of the people in my family arguing discussing this, this over 70 are team ALW, those (like me) in their 50s are 50/50, and those in their 20s/30s are team EJ. No one here is in their 40s.

Singer, song writer, showman and composer of songs in famous musicals, most famously The Lion King and, to a lesser extent, Billy Elliott the Musical

Andrew Lloyd Webber's work is far more famous than he actually is - The Phantom of the Opera, Cats, Sunset Boulevard, Evita, Jesus's Christ Superstar and so on

Elton John has been a household name for longer in the UK. He also had 10 UK number one singles as the artist. I think ALW has probably had a similar number of number one hits as composer, but he wouldn't be the name you'd think of in conjunction with the song; e.g. No Matter What by Boyzone.

My teens had never heard of ALW until the other day. They were actually impressed when I read the list of musicals he's written and how loaded he is.
