Royal mail lost parcel

Fireflies8 · 24/12/2025 17:07

Hi I posted a parcel via royal mail tracked 24 through the post office.

My parcel had the correct address but the post office lady put the wrong postcode on my tracking receipt.
The tracking number says its been returned to sender. I'm 50% sure I put my return address in the parcel. Its been sent to the national return centre but its been saying that on the tracking since 9th December.

It was an expensive parcel. So my question is can the post office lady be liable for this error or can I make a claim for lost parcel via royal mail if the parcel doesn't get back to me.

I wouldn’t expect the Royal Mail or any part of them to be held to account for anything tbh based on a recent complaint I made where they essentially said “not my problem”.

id definitely ask, including at the post office in case it’s gone back there. Did you have any insurance on it? My tracked 24 took over a week.

I sent a parcel with a return address on it, that wasn't collected by my niece, then went to the national return centre, finally turned up at mine, nearly 3 months later, well after I'd had my compensation from RM. Currently a tracked 48 to me, that's been at the north west superhub for over a month, already replaced by the sender. Royal Mail is the new Evry

What was in the parcel?

I think tracked 24 covers compensation of up to £75 as standard, depending on the contents (items such as jewellery not included).

I ordered an item from Vinted. It was sent to a local Royal mail locker, 48 hour tracked. It has arrived in the locker, but I have received no code to retrieve it.

YetAnotherAlias62 · 24/12/2025 19:24

Did you insure it for the full value of the contents?

I had this issue the other day, if you contact InPost with your parcel tracking id they open the locker for you

No I didn't insure it.
I wasn't aware you had to in order to get compensation from Royal mail.

You don’t need to seperately insure (depending on value).
Royal Mail tracked 24 covers up to £75, claims can be made via the RM website which will include questions such as proof of postage, some proof of value (an eBay reference would suffice for that if applicable), description of the package and its contents

It should not matter too much that the postcode differs, but that may complicate the form - the key elements will be proof of postage that it went into the system, their ability to track progress and for you to justify the value of your claim. They will require that time has passed to ‘ensure’ that it is fully lost

Compensation would be expected to come in the form of stamps, I recently managed to use half of my 8 x 2nd class stamps from a while ago just in time to get 8 x 1st class stamps.
I had proof of postage an eBay reference and it had vanished for about a month, so the online claim was dealt with in a matter of days

Thankyou. I guess I will give it a week or two then see if I'm eligible for a claim x

Perfumes are on the list of things that are prohibited from sending via Royal Mail, so you won't be eligible for compensation.

mindutopia · 26/12/2025 19:21

If you put your return address on it, it will pop back out of the system eventually, but it will take some time.

I sent a letter internationally (containing just documents) that required a customs declaration. The man in the post office forgot to affix the sticker with the customs declaration. It got stuck in some sorting office somewhere because it couldn’t actually go on the plane to its destination. It took 8 weeks of just sitting there, but then finally re-entered the system and ended up back with me. 🤷🏻‍♀️
