Stuffed dates

Hi, quick question for anyone who eats stuffed dates. I cannot stand dates so have no knowledge about how they are supposed to be. I’ve bought a box of stuffed dates for a family member for Christmas, stuffed with nuts and fruits etc. they have just arrived but the dates, through the cellophane, feel quite hard? I thought they were supposed to be squishy? Just wanted to check this was normal before I gift them as don’t want to gift them if they aren’t good quality etc. thank you!

Medjool dates are squishy. The other kinds are harder, but perfectly acceptable IMO.

I’d rather they weren’t stuffed, personally, but I’d still eat them as long as walnuts and hazelnuts were not involved.

Mmm… dates.

That’s great - thank you! Was having a panic that they’d gone off or something! Thanks x

What type of dates are they?
Stuffed dates should be soft and pliable, not hard. If they are hard, something is off with the date itself or how it has been stored.
where did you buy them from?

Why stuffed dates can become hard

  • The dates are too dry
  • Older dates or dates stored uncovered lose moisture and firm up.
  • Wrong variety
  • Firmer dates like Deglet Noor are more likely to feel hard when stuffed.
  • Cold storage
  • Refrigeration can temporarily harden dates.
