Working from home via the internet – is it realistic?

Is working from home via the internet genuinely possible, or is most of what you see online just scams?

I’d love to hear real experiences from people who actually do this.

I do but it’s quite a niche job ( advise people who want to give large sums to charity) and I am a freelancer. TBH I’d rather “go to work” as I prefer separation of work and home and you don’t establish relationships with colleagues online.

Most people I know do hybrid where they wfh some of the time, but there’s been a drift back to more office time, esp in financial services.

if you mean the text messages from “TikTok marketing” telling you that you can make 5k a month working for them, then yes, they’re scams.

Loads of people work remotely full time! My DH, by best friends, her DH ... It's not that unusual.

Pedallleur · 22/12/2025 16:37

Yes. Work colleagues do it all the time. They remote in and do eg finance stuff that doesn't need an office presence.

blankcanvas3 · 22/12/2025 16:38

My DH’s business hires people via Indeed for completely WFH jobs. There’s about 6 people who work there who have never met anybody else - he did it to save getting a bigger office as the business was expanding. It’s all gone well so far, there’s always so many applications and a lot of them are usually under qualified as people are desperate for WFH but the people he has hired have been great. He’s not a scammer!

Taupeness · 22/12/2025 16:38

I think OP means those "You can earn thousands working from home!" type scams, rather than people who have an actual job and work from home.

Blessedbethefruitz · 22/12/2025 16:39

Ive been wfh since 2016 full time, but im in b2b magazines, so again quite niche.

boulevardofbrokendreamss · 22/12/2025 16:41

Are you looking at MLM type shite? I work from home so do my many of my friends and of course it’s possible

Bodhifatva · 22/12/2025 16:42

I work from home as a copywriter but it’s probably only a matter of time before AI makes me obsolete.

mindutopia · 22/12/2025 16:46

Well, yes, of course. Many jobs can be done remotely. I’m a clinical researcher and I’ve been working from home part or all of the week for nearly 20 years. Dh is a company director running a retail business that sells to mostly the restaurant industry. He’s only on site one day a week, otherwise works from home.

But if Betty tells you that you can get rich quick and work from home if only you pay her £500 first, that’s a scam. Look for genuine remote jobs in an area where you have experience and see what’s out there.

MaarvaCarassi · 22/12/2025 16:46

My job is fully remote, but it’s also very specialised.

Same, although I'm not a copywriter, but it's not totally dissimilar. AI is going to do for us within the next couple of years, probably.

Yes, I’m trying to work out what I can retrain as that won’t be taken over by our AI overlords!

parietal · 22/12/2025 18:41

Many people in computing and coding can do this. DH runs a company that builds websites and wfh full time and his employees also wfh. They all have v specific skills to do this.

This. Read the OP's OP, she is not talking about regular WFH.

Well you can work from home training AI if you have the right skills. I did that did a while.

millions work from home - it’s hardly unusual
