For a 10 yr old? I havent watched it for years and really cant remember how ....violent it is! Or even, is it violent? I know its chaotic.

Iirc the violence is quite cartoonish.

HorribleHisTories15 · 20/12/2025 20:06

My 11 yo really wants to watch it too. We haven’t given in yet. Is it a new / old trend?

Tremors (sp?) are ‘in’ again too.

we’ve seen ratings as being 15 as well as 12, so we are not quite sure yet.

MsSmartShoes · 20/12/2025 20:08

It’s so dated to their eyes. My DD10 loves it and isn’t in any way afraid of it. Same with Ghostbusters.

Illbefinejustbloodyfine · 20/12/2025 20:09

From what i can tell Gremlins was "re rated" to 12A. I dont think its a trend, was just trying to think of something different to watch.

My absolute favourite Christmas film.
I'd say fine for a 10yr old, but you should watch first and decide for yourself.

Ukholidaysaregreat · 20/12/2025 20:11

Gremlins has a Father Christmas spoiler that I had forgotten about when I let my kids watch it. Obviously it is a great film despite that.

Forever1973 · 20/12/2025 20:12

It was originally a 15 when it came out (before 12 existed) and then downgraded to a 12a. The reason it was rejected as a PG was mainly the footage of gremlins being put in a kitchen blender/microwave, which are somewhat gory.

CheeseNPickle3 · 20/12/2025 20:13

Yes, I might have been a bit younger when I watched it, but I remember not liking that bit about the chimney

Some of the gremlin deaths are a bit gory. Depends if your DC is sensitive to that

Pineapplewaves · 20/12/2025 20:14

It has a 12a rating. My friend took her 6, 7 and 9 year olds to the cinema to see it last week and I said to DP that I didn’t think it would be suitable for our 10 year old and he agreed. I remember watching it as a child and being scared but I can’t remember how old I was. I found Gremlins 2 really funny and the scene at the end when they all sing “New York New York” is brilliant.

Forever1973 · 20/12/2025 20:15

Gremlins II is much more OTT and farcical, almost impossible to take seriously (intentionally so) and might be a better option for children.

Heyhelga · 20/12/2025 20:15

I seem to remember one of the gremlins had it's head chopped off with a sword with the head landing in the fire. Also remember another exploding inside a microwave. I imagine those scenes would be cut before the watershed today.

Gardener82 · 20/12/2025 20:18

My children had definitely watched it by the time they were 10 and didn’t find it scary.
It depends on the child though, maybe YouTube Gremlins the worst bits and decide for yourself.

Illbefinejustbloodyfine · 20/12/2025 20:43

Ooh both dc still appear to believe so not sure i fancy the spoiler!,

I don't think there are any Father Christmas spoilers in Gremlins II.

SexyFrenchDepression · 20/12/2025 20:48

Mine were a fair bit younger than 10 when they watched it, they loved it. I had totally forgotten about the FC spoiler but it went over their heads as they weren't really following the story that much, more interested in the gremlins. Such a brilliant film!!

puppyparent · 20/12/2025 20:56

Mine watched it at 6 I think. She found it to be very silly/funny. Some parts boring (the beginning scenes)

firstofallimadelight · 20/12/2025 21:39

No there’s a couple of goulish scenes where gremlins explode. But the scene where his girlfriend talks about her fathers death is very upsetting. I’d say 14/15 personally.

LoudSnoringDog · 20/12/2025 22:46

Loved Gremlins as a kid
