Being shouted at in front of the entire class

OP posts:
BengalBangle · 18/12/2025 20:29

Having my mouth washed out with soap in primary and my German teacher hitting me across the head with a textbook in secondary.

kittenheel · 18/12/2025 20:31

Writing lines and having them torn up in front of me

the80sweregreat · 18/12/2025 20:31

I can remember children being caned and the girls had the slipper, was a long time ago though .
Lines were often dished out too. I always had to help my friend do her lines!
Being taken out the line up and made to sit on your own .. that was humiliating. Mostly because of talking.

Being brought into the classroom next door to be humiliated in front of a class of children and teacher I didn’t know (primary 3) for writing too slow

Dawnb19 · 18/12/2025 20:34

Writing lines and then being told to rip them up and put them in the bin without the teacher looking at them. 😭Being kept in during lunch or after school, not being allowed to go to sports day or a pantomime once.

Anewuser · 18/12/2025 20:39

Having to write lines every break time for a week because I ran after the first bell went when I should have stood still - I was 6.

JenniferandJuniper · 18/12/2025 20:40

Ruler on palm for talking, slipper on calf for talking, we had to pull our knee sock down. I remember doing lines. All junior school.
I also remember at secondary school the boys lining up outside the head teacher's office for the cane.

This also happened to me & 5 others because someone on our table lied to our teacher. We were 5 & 6 years old.

ArghMyEars · 18/12/2025 20:42

I remember classmates having to stand in the corner of the classroom with their hands on their head - I never had to do it thankfully!
Had my fair share of lines though!

Sparklesandspandexgallore · 18/12/2025 20:44

Being kept behind after school and made to write an essay. The entire class was given detention because of a few naughty boys. The teacher even acknowledged that she was punishing us all because of their behaviour.
Being slapped across the legs for taking too long to get changed for pe.

Gosh that’s unlocked a memory. I was made to stand in the corner once, I don’t remember having to put my hands on my head but it’s possible I did as my pants fell down. I’m reliving that day right now.

edited to add I was only 4/5

DelphiniumBlue · 18/12/2025 20:48

Lines. The slipper, which meant you had to fetch a plimsol in order to be hit with it by an adult. Being sent to the Head.

gamerchick · 18/12/2025 20:48

We got slapped in nursery /infants and hit with a plimsol in juniors. We got the chalk and blackboard rubbers thrown at us.

Seniors was just classroom humiliation and lines.

Oddly I think of primary school quite fondly.

SpiceGhoul · 18/12/2025 20:50

I can pretty much still recite my schools standard punishment exercise 😂.

sprigatito · 18/12/2025 20:50

Standing on the hot pipes in bare feet for the whole PE lesson because I didn’t have a PE kit. Repeatedly. Aged 4-5. <bitter>

glendabrownlow · 18/12/2025 20:51

I remember at secondary school in the 70's the teacher hitting a girl on the hand with a ruler. I can still remember watching this happen, and noting the female teacher's short legs with surprisingly muscular calves encased in sun gold tights and A line skirt. She stood very still with her feet neatly together so that her t-bar shoes touched. She looked hideous. I hated her very much while she hit the pupil.

FlatfacedCattypuss · 18/12/2025 20:52

Standing in the cabbage patch with a large cork in your mouth, being tied to the goalposts on the playing field, standing in the corner keeping your nose on a pipe, having your coat confiscated during outdoor break time in the winter, being hit on hands and legs with bundles of wooden rulers . . .

RedPanda2022 · 18/12/2025 20:55

Not sure my comprehensive in the 90s had any actual punishments. Theoretical detentions but they couldn’t do anything if someone didn’t attend. Being sent out to the corridor.

BrighterLater · 18/12/2025 20:58

50 words and 50 meanings, falla-la-la-laa la-la-la-laa

(Hello to anyone who went to same school 👋)

Issued by Mr Falla, sung by class to tune of 'Deck the Halls' - required writing 50 words and 50 meanings from dictionary, start letter varied depending on your sin!

Otherwise just normal lines. Officially no corporal punishment but not sure boys PE teachers followed those rules.

Allthesnowallthetime · 18/12/2025 21:01

Being asked to write out a whole page of the dictionary

Punishment essays

enjoyinglifenowretired · 18/12/2025 21:03

At primary school having to add up all the numbers between 1 and 100.
At secondary school I was made to miss break every day for a week and cut up pieces of string which would later be used to tie exam papers together.

scalt · 18/12/2025 21:09

I was a fidgety child so I was often made to sit apart from everyone else. My primary school was quite creative with punishments, I remember these ones:
Boys who laughed when told off were made to laugh in a mirror.
When two children messed about in assembly, a pushchair was wheeled in, and the “babies” invited to sit in it.
Boys who messed about with sticks after being told not to were blindfolded, so they would know what might happen if they poked an eye out.

Seymour5 · 18/12/2025 21:10

Last three years in a Scottish primary school in the 1950s. Belted on the hand on many occasions with a tawse, a leather strap. The woman should never have been let loose on children.

Primary..being made to stand with our faces to the wall for the entire break, being shouted at

we had an absolute psycho teacher for our last year of primary, he thought nothing of ripping up work and exercise books and screaming in your face. We also had a May festival every year where we had to dance round the maypole. One poor lad messed up the sequence and he actually pushed him over then kicked him hard in the leg! He wasn’t very nice to me either. I found out years ago from my much older brother that he was shagging our mum behind my dads back when I was still in infants ( he lived at the end of my street)

secondary .. had the usual lines, detention, report cards etc, although we’d occasional have the chalk board rubber chucked at us for not paying attention, that bloody hurt as it had a wooden back. Oh and my female pe teacher once launched herself off the trampoline at me and shoved me hard in the head all because I was staring at the lads playing table tennis at the other side of the hall and not paying attention 😂😱

this was in the eighties and early nineties. God knows how the teachers got away with it.
