Help! Where do we put the furniture?

We have just moved house and have a lovely big living room now (as opposed to our old one which could barely fit a sofa). Problem is, I can't work out where to put anything? If anyone has any suggestions for a good layout I'd love to hear them...

The only thing we really have to fit in somewhere is DH's massive TV (sigh) and a giant painting of mine which will only fit on the wall next to the door - apart from that we're open to ideas! We are planning on changing all our furniture so no restrictions there really. Please help!

My suggestion —

  1. giant painting on wall beside door like you described, with half height bookcases underneath
  2. massive TV on the wall opposite painting, with sideboard underneath
  3. corner sofa facing the TV, pulled about 80cm away from the wall to allow access to bookshelves
  4. beanbag or floor cushions on raised bit to the left of fireplace for a reading nook?

@blueberrymatcha thanks for the ideas! I think the only downside of that is that the TV will be the first thing you see when you walk in the room, and it's so ugly. But I agree it seems the only sensible place really. Dh thought about having it above the stove but I'm not sure I like that either!

Swap the TV and painting round so you see it when you walk in the room.

(You would then rotate the sofa if you want it to face the TV)

Sorry just seen your painting won't fit there.

Put it in another room?

I say this with kindness, please do not put the TV about the fire stove — if it’s massive, it’ll probably dominate and pull focus away from the fire stove (itself a lovely feature). It would annoy you fairly quickly.

Agree with the TV being first thing you see when you enter not being ideal, if you could move the painting to another room (maybe dining room?) then defo swap the TV to the other wall.

*I say this as a regretful idiot who allowed my husband to buy a 77” TV which now dominates the entire “focal wall”. We hate it.

@blueberrymatcha I would much rather get rid of the TV! Or at least buy one of those ones that looks like a picture when it's not on.

@Mulledjuice unfortunately the painting is 2 sq m and there are no other walls in the house it will fit on. Dh would much prefer I get rid of it but we have to compromise 😂

you could buy one of these lovely tv covers to discreetly hide it

A Samsung Frame on an easel, displaying art when not in use, to the left of the fire stove would look rather tasteful — you could then have the sofa facing the fire stove and a bookshelf wall opposite the painting 🤔

Where can I get the lovely tv cover please?
