Friend likes to solo travel. Asked me if I wanted to come and I said yes. I've never been to Spain before! Please tell me all about it for those who have been.

Love Madrid, one of my favourite cities
Hopefully you'll get lovely blue skies although its chilly

Particularly recommend the Royal Palace and Cathedral, palace is gorgeous and you can do a cathedral tour up to the roof to take photos.

If you don't have a hotel then Cool Rooms Atocha is fabulous, near Plaza De Santa Ana for outside day drinking and tapas. Hammam Al Andalus also great if you like a spa.

It will probably be lovely in the day and freezing in the evening, but there are lots of lovely little bars to hang out in so go for it. At least it will be free of tourists so that's something.

It's beautiful but it will be freezing in January. Hopefully you're there for kings (Spanish Christmas. The parade is great 5th jan )

Agree about freezing and possibly rainy in January but I would take that 100 times over being there in the summer.

There is enough to keep you busy for months, but after living there for a while, I would suggest you get one of those “Top Ten Things to do in… “ guides for Madrid and pick from there the things that align the most with your interests.
