I think it’s the floral perfume stuff they put in them. She has other allergies, hayfever, dust etc. can’t use child’s farm products as she’s allergic to those. By allergy I mean mild rashes, itchy all over and constant scratching and eyes watering/nose running. Don’t know what to do. Also have the same issue with washing powders too. Even fairy is a no go

Our eldest had/can sometimes still get severe eczema, especially contact eczema, allergies, hay fever etc

for washing 60C and above to kill dust mites and do an extra rinse - we could use fairy non-bio, but preferred ecover zero

we had to put cetraben oil in his bath (pharmacy) and wash him in the emollient oil/cream and use the smallest amount of baby eco zero organic shampoo we could find

E45 products have lanolin in which can cause a reaction

go to pharmacy and ask about bath/hair replacements - they might be able to help

I am allergic to perfume so can not have any scented products at all. What is interesting is stuff labelled sensitive can still have fragrance in. I use Tesco non bio washing powder, it has no scent in it at all. I use simple hair care products.

I use lemon juice, baking soda and lemon juice plus bleach, though as little as possible to clean. Zero scented candles or air fresheners.

And stuff labelled ‘unscented’ can have fragrance chemicals in it! You get to be very good at reading labels.

I was excited to find another ff product form your post, so I checked out the Tesco non-bio: it has ‘parfum’, which is the word used for unspecified fragrance chemicals. There are dozens of fragrance chemicals. I know I’m allergic to three specific ones. I don’t use anything that lists ‘parfum’, as I don’t know whether it includes my specific allergens. I guess you’re lucky that yours isn’t included in that particular detergent.

Another thing is that recipes change. So I’m always checking labels on anything that is not specifically labelled ‘Fragrance Free’.

Chronic lifelong eczema sufferer here.

You don't need laundry detergent or fabric softener. Even the scent of those makes me feel allergic now! I have used laundry 'eco' balls for decades, they are brilliant and will save you a fortune.

'Faith in Nature' shampoo and conditioner seems to agree with me.

I use sea salt or Detol soap in the bath.

It's all a process of finding out what products you can use.

BlackAmericanoNoSugar · 16/12/2025 10:23

I'm allergic to a lot of things. I use soap instead of shower gel, the one I use is Le Petit Olivier but any traditional, unscented soap will work (not Dove as it isn't soap, and most supermarket soaps are over fragranced). I use Aveda shampoo, it's more expensive than regular but I need to use a much smaller amount for each wash so it doesn't work out all that expensive over time.

For laundry I use unscented Earth Breeze laundry sheets and I don't use fabric conditioner I have felted wool dryer balls in the tumble dryer instead. I used to use Filetti laundry detergent but I don't know if that's still available, I had to change when I left the UK as I couldn't get it here.

Something else that has worked well for me is an air purifier in my bedroom. I bought Starkvind from Ikea and it runs on the auto setting all the time which is very quiet.

Thanks for the advice and doctor tips. We all have health insurance so will look into the allergy testing. I’m near London so hopefully will find someone. Writing down these brands and off to the shops to hopefully save dd from the mega itch!

DS was very allergic to everything, even surcare, and then he would scratch until he bled. Look up homemade detergent recipes - I used water, borax substitute, bicarb and grated baby castille soap (as pure as can be) and he was fine with it. It is only in the last few years that we have transitioned to surcare sensitive (not surcare) as he has hit his late teens. For washing, just use water or baby castille soap and maybe almond oil if you need a moisturiser. You could try aveeno but childs farm can be like napalm for the wrong kid.

PigeonsandSquirrels · 16/12/2025 11:01

Use soap nuts for laundry. It’s not perfect but it works ok with my eczema.

sashh · 16/12/2025 11:18

Talk to a pharmacist. I have psoriasis on my scalp so I pay £10 - 15 for a shampoo from the pharmacy.

I used to use Alphosyl but they stopped making it, currently I use Capasal.

Make sure you (or she) actually wash the scalp and rinse well. Use conditioner on the ends but not near the scalp.

The cheap and cheerful stuff seems to be less of an issue for me & DD. Aldi's non bio washing powder and their shampoo in the grey bottle. Not very glamourous but at least we are not scratching.

the80sweregreat · 16/12/2025 11:56

bio tablets out of tesco and Sainsbury’s for laundry also works well for us as they don’t smell etc. Green packaging.

LostittoBostik · 16/12/2025 12:01

aveeno or dermol 500 (available over the counter fr from large chemists)

Magpiecomplex · 16/12/2025 12:02

Fairy and Dove are both horrible. I use Surcare mostly, with occasional Ecover, and Simple for skincare. For me it's SLS in skincare, bio enzymes in detergent and fragrance in pretty much everything. Avoid those, and I'm fine! Unfortunately hand wash almost always contains SLS, so I can't completely avoid it when out and about.

the80sweregreat · 16/12/2025 12:03

Dermol is brilliant on my hands ! Ds2 had it prescribed for eczema and it’s good.

You could try eco laundry balls; they have no detergent in them. https://www.amazon.co.uk/eco-wash-balls/s?k=eco+wash+balls

I came on to recommend these too - I've used them in the past and they're great. Also would second above recommendation for Aveeno products. I don't have allergies as such but I do have very sensitive skin and swear by Aveeno.

ThatCalmFinch · 16/12/2025 12:09

Burts Bees baby bee gentle shampoo & wash and soap nuts, for some people detergents can trigger allergies/eczema, Dove sensitive bar is hypoallergenic.

If you use these do make sure you run a service wash or drum clean regularly. I used eco balls when DD was little and the washing machine started stinking and her eczema got worse. Ironically, after talking a to a nurse friend she suggested I tried Arial and washing at higher temperatures and DD's eczema disappeared. Often it is the perfume that is the irritant not the enzymes in bio powder. although, that is not always the case.

You need something that will kill the mould in washing machines and using eco balls or any kind of bleach free detergent won't do that.

AutumnClouds · 16/12/2025 12:36

You can use soap nuts for hair washing as well as laundry - takes a bit of practice to get right as very different from using a product that squeezes out of a bottle and froths up but makes hair very lovely and shiny when you crack it.

Yes @RampantIvy this is a good tip. :)

RandomMess · 16/12/2025 14:11

I haven’t read every post.

Have you “stripped” your washing machine? There could be a lot of residue of detergents and fabric conditioner still in there. If you have used the drawer then the pipes leading to are notorious for this.

How much and which antihistamines is she on?

a specialist would recommend something like Telfast in the evenings and then a different one each morning. You need to get on top of it before reducing the dose.

I used to be on 2 piriton at night and then 1-2 Telfast during the day.

WanderingGiraffe · 16/12/2025 14:12

I’m allergic to all washing powders except Persil non bio liquid - have been since I was a child. Ariel non bio was ok for a while when I was a child but then I started reacting to that too. Similar mild but itchy rashes…
No idea what it is with other stuff but I just have to stick with Persil.

Ive even had reactions to Simple products, esp lotions but the shower gels and face wipes seem ok.

TeenLifeMum · 16/12/2025 14:39

Allergy testing really helped me know what to avoid. I can’t use anything that contains salicylates. I can usually use vegan products. I have to check everything and sun cream is a nightmare because they change the ingredients every year!
