Handmade quilt stolen by DPD??

Hi
Not posted before but wondering if anyone has any advice.
My MiL has been making a quilt for my friend's sister for literally a year, as a special custom birthday present.

She posted it last week by DPD, who kept changing the delivery date... first it was Thursday, then Sunday, then Monday.
My friend's sister, who we'll call Ellie, has revieved a completely different parcel of some pesticides, with apparently the delivery label for the quilt stuck on it??

My friend is convinced it was deliberately stolen. MiL is devastated that all that work is just gone, and Ellie/friend are furious and upset that they also don't have the quilt and it's not exactly replaceable, what with all the effort time and money that it took to make it.

DPD are saying they'll "investigate" now that my MIL has raised a complaint. We're all desperately hoping the quilt will turn up but are we being naive? It is a busy period but does anyone know how this could have happened? Is there a valid reason for parcels to get new labels during their journey with DPD?

It also seems odd to me that someone might steal it because obviously although it's beautiful it's also clearly dedicated to Ellie and her sister, with a date on it, so would someone really be able to enjoy it if stolen??? You could remove that tag but still.. just disgusting to me.

Really interested to hear if anyone else has positive experiences of this kind of thing turning up.

(Would share pics but we're not sure what we're going to do next but basically it's a large quilt similar to this: but much nicer. Not the actual quilt)

How terrible! However I doubt it was deliberately stolen. Far more likely that someone cocked up, the parcel tore open, the item lost somewhere and someone tried to cover their arse stupidly by sticking the label elsewhere.

The worse thing about losses like this is that you can never get back the true value of a handmade item, even if you do get compensated at all.

Obviously someone's fucked up somewhere but of course it's not been "stolen" - how would anyone know it was a quilt in the parcel and not, for example, a pile of dust sheets? Unless your MIL wrote handmade quilt on a goods label in which case that's on her, she should have been vaguer.

It’ll be a total cock up, not deliberate. Package ripped, label came off, etc. A handmade quilt is lovely, but only really valuable to the maker and the recipient, there’s so much tech and other expensive items being delivered at the moment, they are what will get stolen.

This does happen, the labels get mixed up, I had it happen and got some curtain fixings rather than leggings. I really doubt it was stolen.

By the way rhe person who was to receive the pesticides likely has the quilt; so they may say that, otherwise it’s sitting unlabelled in a warehouse. They may find it,

Thank you all who commented.
I appreciate the reality check that it's not likely high on the list of things to steal, as it's not obviously valuable until unwrapped, and even then it's subjective but it's still quite concerning to think that the package might have been damaged.

I really wish Ellie had checked what original label was on the pesticides before getting them collected as I feel that would have been a big clue. It's all up to DPD now. We're going to hand deliver anything like this in future cos it's just not worth the risk.

I still have no idea why the DPD would be relabelling anything! Surely everything starts out labelled??

Thank you everyone who reassured me, it was really helpful in helping me have perspective.

I think it could be stolen, I had a Hobbs coat I’d bought from EBay “disappeared” by DPD. Large packages don’t just disappear. I don’t think their systems for recovery are very effective though. How disappointing.

It got found and has now been delivered.
We think what happened is that things got very mixed up after it initially couldn't be delivered (weird address not directly on the road) and that's where things went wrong.

I'm sorry to hear about your coat though, we are very lucky our parcel was found and not stolen in the end.
