How do you keep your knives sharp?

We bought some new kitchen knives about 6 months ago but they already feel as though they are becoming blunt and are definitely not cutting as well. What do you use to keep yours sharp? Have seen some sharpeners but they seem very expensive!

Either use a steel which is a skill. DH has a grinder in the garage and periodically takes them all out to sharpen.

I've got a small collection of sharpening gadgets but the only one that consistently works in a few seconds is my 60-year-old steel - you know, the rod with lengthwise ridges. Five swipes each side and it's done for several months.

The only thing that would be better is the even more traditional combination of whetstones and a leather strop. Much harder to learn and takes longer, so I've never bothered with that.

DP sharpens them with a steel, he’s got the proper swishy technique. Looks v impressive.

It's dead easy, though! I'm sure your DH's technique is better-looking, but flourishes aren't really necessary. You just stroke the blade along the steel, from hilt to tip. It naturally follows a curve as you swipe 🙂
