Liverpool parade attacker

I don't know where else to paste this, it's about a guy, not drunk or on drugs but stressed who lost it and rammed through people in a crowd. He's on trial.
https://www.bbc.co.uk/news/live/c8xd97z0k00t

I find myself thinking that it's absolutely an example of the state of our roads, I'm surprised it doesn't happen more often.

Where I live, edge of the Cotswolds, the roads are jammed and people break the rules all the time, not giving way, especially on roundabouts, speeding, cutting in where there isn't space, tail gating, flashing lights, using mobile phones while driving, just generally pushing their way through. The size of modern cars with their horrendous, blinding headlights doesn't help, nor do all the potholes. And then there's the anti cyclist rage which is usually pointless and nitpicking.

Round our way, cows on the local common get mown down by hit and run drivers. I'm afraid I get this guy. Apparently he keeps crying in the dock, I feel sorry for him

I find it unbelievable that OP, or anyone , is defending the man's actions.

I also think to start a thread about this while the trial is ongoing is a very dubious thing to do.

Not defending as such, rather seeing why you might have some sympathy, the kind of driving I have described is not to be ignored. There have been several threads recently about UK roads and driver behaviour. If anyone thinks 'I would never behave like that', well, people in glass houses.....one day you run down a cow (and if it flips over the bonnet and lies groaning with a broken pelvis until the police come to put it down), the next day it's an old, slow person or a child or a cyclist you 'didn't see'.
Cars are indeed weapons, certainly that's how some people drive them.

I can categorically say I would not purposefully drive into a crowd and continue driving with people trapped under my car. Which is what Paul Doyle did. He deserves zero sympathy.

Justlostmybagel · 15/12/2025 17:14

Sorry, OP. You're bonkers. This thread has been unanimous.

HoneyParsnipSoup · 15/12/2025 17:15

and if it flips over the bonnet and lies groaning with a broken pelvis until the police come to put it down

It’s almost like you harbour some weird obsession with running over live creatures and are tentatively trying to find out if it’s normal

QueenStevie · 15/12/2025 17:20

Everyone in Liverpool knew the parade was going on that day and that roads would be closed. If he couldn't cope with that then he shouldn't have made the decision to drive into town. He thought he could take a chance and tailgate the ambulance then he realised his plan wasn't going to work and people weren't moving out of the way for him so he lost it. When it happend, I think everyone assumed he must have been drunk, on drugs or have suffered some kind of medical/mental health emergency but no, he just lost his temper. How no one died is a miracle, thank goodness.

What an absolutely bizarre post. I would feel horrendous if I killed a cow (or any creature). DH has had some suicidal deer leap out of the hedge on his way to work. Thankfully he's managed to avoid hitting them but even the near miss has shaken him up.

This is the most unhinged post. What are you talking about?

So what I'm talking about, that you're all bothering not to stop and think about is the amount of violence on our roads now. For instance, the other day in heavy traffic, single carriage roads leading to a roundabout all proceeding slowly and I needed to turn right into one of the approaches.
No one was giving way so eventually when there was a minute gap, I signalled and pulled out into the space. The guy behind in something white and flash took umbrage, he tailgated slowly to the turn, followed me left, then held back until the road widened very slightly then he calculated carefully just how close he could drive to me, shot past practically taking my wing mirror off, had to brake sharply about 10 cars ahead and barge into a space, causing other people to brake sharply too. It's called road rage, unnecessary and violent and it is getting worse. But still, I know that you are all perfect drivers and never ever break any rules so it's lost on you.
This is my last post and I am not bonkers but I do feel like an alien and unfortunately, as a cyclist, I am sick of reading of cyclist deaths as a result of perfect drivers who happened not to be looking and who got let off without any form of punishment.

Well it’s hardly our fault your posts are rambling, bizarre, irrelevant and borderline concerning is it?

We know what road rage is. We know it’s unacceptable.
What Paul Doyle did is way beyond a road rage incident. He purposefully drove into a crowd of people, a crowd which included children. He continued to drive when there were people underneath his car.
Why do you think that deserves sympathy?

I’m not a perfect driver but I know that I wouldn’t ever behave the way he did.
That fact that there are poor and dangerous drivers on the road doesn’t make it right or worthy of sympathy.

Pedestrians are at bottom of the pecking order.
Even when walking on pavements they are fair game for cyclists cycling on the pavement, for drivers mounting the pavements, etc etc.

So apart from.the very very rare occasions when a pedestrian does something utterly stupid like walking into the road without checking for traffic my sympathy is always with the pedestrians.

And in absolutely no scenario is deliberately driving into people, as this man did, right. And he deserves zero sympathy.

Wtf?

He didn’t just get a bit flustered and go the wrong way. If he had done he’d have stopped and put his handbrake on! He drove dangerously into over 100 people! His constant crying and snivelling is getting on my nerves. He could have bloody killed somoene. I hope he cries even more tomorrow when he finds out he’s going to prison for a long time. He’s a nasty wanker

GrannyAchingsShepherdsHut · 15/12/2025 21:01

He could have bloody killed somoene.

I actually can't believe he didn't. There were 4 people under the car when he was finally stopped - one was a child - the fire brigade had to lift it up to get them out.

He must have thought he'd killed people. He must have known people were under the car and he carried on going. He must have seen adults, children, and a pushchair thrown into the air when he hit them.

He saw all that and still didn't voluntarily stop, he wanted to hurt more people. I just can't get my head around it at all. He was sober, not having a psychotic break, was just... angry about nothing very much? It's terrifying.

reesewithoutaspoon · 16/12/2025 08:41

He only stopped because a man jumped in the back of his car and put it into park.

I am sick of hearing people making excuses for angry men.
There is no excuse, he just got so pissed off he couldn't get through the crowds, he lost his temper and deliberately drove at people.
You can see him hit people then swerve to aim at more.

It's sheer luck noone was killed.

JackJarvisEsq · 16/12/2025 08:54

I don’t for a second feel sorry for someone who undertook, sped and ran a red light even before he reached the crowds.

his own dash cam showed all this then him shouting and beeping at the crowds on a road he shouldn’t have been on.

he claimed someone in the crowd pulled a knife on him and that’s why he didn’t stop. police confirm they’ve scoured vast amounts of CCTV and there’s nowhere they can confirm his claim.

he claimed he drove slowly and calmly. His own dash cam shows that is not the case.

he then claimed alcohol was thrown into his eyes as his reasoning for not stopping. Police confirm that while a plastic cup was thrown through the car it did not contain any alcohol.

the man has lied and lied and it was only a member of the public holding his hand over the park brake and four (FOUR) bodies being under his car that brought him to a stop

he thought him better than anyone else, and that that he needed to “win”

134 people were injured that day and it wasn’t until the 11th hour and seeing his own dash cam footage did he even begin to change his story

disgrace

3678194b · 16/12/2025 12:31

Wow so he's got a history of violence and even spent 12 months in prison in the past. Hope he gets a long sentence today.

Flowerslamp · 16/12/2025 12:36

It's interesting how all the reporting previously has suggested he was a hero former Royal Marine when he was actually discharged for basically being a nasty piece of work (from an organisation, which puts up with a lot of that out of necessity).

Thatsnotmynamee · 16/12/2025 12:58

It's quite tragic, his life story - the way he pulled himself together and apparently did well and served the community, then this. Like it was lurking all the time. I feel so bad for his family

Flowerslamp · 16/12/2025 13:08

21.5 years!

I needed to be a lot, but given what we see rapists and murderers get...

Westfacing · 16/12/2025 13:11

So so many people injured, trapped under the car, just so awful.

I was impressed with the judge's measured delivery.

I thought it would be around 20 years.

3678194b · 16/12/2025 13:11

A sentence of 21 years and 6 months. Well done Judge, just what he deserves.
