Asking for references via email

Sorry this is a really stupid question. I’d like to leave my school and I’m making an application elsewhere. I can’t speak to the head face to face I’m very intimidated by them and last time this happened they tried to quite strongly talk me out of the process and it intimidates me. Now I need to ask politely beforehand for a reference request. Words are really failing me right now. Can anyone help?

Why are you asking for a reference before handing in your notice? Surely just put your notice in writing and give the appropriate name as a reference for your new job.

Teaching references are normally done at short list not after offer.

Honestly OP I think just say that you require a reference and just keep it short and factual

So they know you’re trying to leave when you might not even be successful? That’s not a great position to be in.
