Useless fact of the day......
Before you put one of these sentimental plaques up in your house, think again.
The quote is taken from a graveyard plaque to commemorate the victims of the 1918 flu epidemic in Vine Lake Cemetery, Medfield, Massachussetts.
The original plaque reads, "Remember us, for we too have lived, laughed and loved".

I don’t think anyone has put these up in the last 5 years or maybe longer.

I’m hoping these wall hangings have gone out of fashion now? They were awful when they were around.

I did not know that.

On a separate note, What's the best way to get a tattoo removed?

Thanks OP

I've seen a few in people's houses recently. I always make sure they know the sentiments come from a cemetery memorial to epidemic victims. That really kills the vibe 😂

But that’s quite a nice thing for a memorium plaque, I think. Reminding you that they are not just victims.

It kind of makes me like it more. It always seemed a bit bland and generic.

localbutterfly · 14/12/2025 00:20

Isn't it more likely that both the 1918 gravestone and the 2000s slogan draw on Bessie Anderson Stanley's 1904 poem, "Success," which defines success as having "lived well, laughed often, and loved much"? However, I appreciate your post as I didn't know about the gravestone and I think it gives poignancy to the slogan.

I have a "Live, Love, Laugh!" painted wooden plaque - actually not ugly, just not my thing - that my then-boss gave me for Christmas in 2006. I put it up above my desk at work but when our company decided to close our local office and have everyone telecommute I wasn't sure what to do with it. Luckily, I discovered that it wedged perfectly under the air conditioning unit in my RV - where it now serves as a shelf: living, loving and laughing up to the ceiling!

Damnloginpopup · 14/12/2025 08:41

Yeah, but I can't fit 'coughs and sneezes spread diseases' on my chimney breast.

KayPop · 14/12/2025 08:54

I was doing interviews via Teams once with my former boss. One woman had that sign on her wall in the background.

When we finished the interview my boss gave his reasons for not hiring her and with a parting shot said 'and besides I don't hire anyone who has to have instructions written on their wall on how to be a human being'. I almost spat my coffee out.

In fairness she was a terrible candidate who gave off a huge sense of entitlement and arrogance, so deserved the zinger.

Unless one views reminders of death and our inevitable mortality as something to swerve, I don't think this provenance story is a deterrent but rather adds a nice bit of grit to an otherwise sentimental piece of home decor.
