Fancy An Omelette?

From Gwen’s omelette’s in Gavin and Stacey to Smithy’s take away order, there are so many random or iconic moments that have made their way into my family’s every day conversations.

What tv phrases have made their way into your family conversations, perhaps repurposed?

Years ago in Coronation Street, Liz was about to have a crafty snog with someone and she uttered the phrase, “Not in the ginnel” (ooh errr!) This has stuck with us.

At work, Dave from accounts often leaves one of his “signature bakes” stinking up the toilets. Thanks to GBBO we have adapted it into our office vernacular.

Whenever I ask where someone is, one of my children invariably yells from another room, “We didn’t burn him!”

Need the laughing emoji! That’s brilliant!

We can’t move anything heavy without channelling the Chuckle Brothers, “to me, to you”.

“There’s food everywhere! Peel a satsuma. Crack a nut!” Julia from Motherland to Paul’s parents in the Christmas special. Oft quoted to anyone’s enquiry on what’s for tea.

ArcticGrass · 13/12/2025 07:58

To me, to you. Yes, every time moving something large….

when talking about an ex-colleague’s husband, who was fond of a drink (basic alcoholic but v v posh) ‘when I was shooting elephants in Africa!’. From the Fast Show.

Grumpyoldpersonwithcats · 13/12/2025 08:07

On entering any posh tea shop. 'I'll have a choocks bun' (from Limmy's show)

HotAsSatansBalls · 13/12/2025 08:11

Good moaning!

MYOB12 · 13/12/2025 08:21

‘Pivotttt!!’ Whenever we’re moving something that requires 2 people.

Sweetiedarling7 · 13/12/2025 08:28

It’s a moo point

We want the finest wines available to humanity. And we want them here, and we want them now! Whenever service is a bit slow...

laplage · 13/12/2025 12:20

When anything is bland or monotonous - 'It's a bit boring' - Sigourney in dinnerladies

Was that Rowley Birkin QC? 😅 I still quote the Fast Show ones although my colleagues are boomers and millennials so I just get this 🤨 face in response.

Ditto Friends 'You fell asleep?!' although everyone gets the 'We were ON A BREAK' reference 😂

Ghostofborleyrectory · 13/12/2025 15:28

When my kid asks what is for dinner, he is aware he will get the response of 'Shadows and Lies' ( Johnny Nice Painter, The Fast Show)

DoreensLemonDrizzle · 13/12/2025 16:21

Fast Show was epic! How can I forget we use “Scorchio!” ☀️

Whenever DP and I are getting into a bit of a squabble, he’ll say “sorry, is this a five minute argument?” and make me laugh. (Monty Python sketch).

Maryberrysbouffant · 14/12/2025 12:05

If we have a takeaway “are we sharing or do you want to do a smithy?” (Gavin and Stacey reference)

If we on holiday and the weather is shit/anything else going wrong “we’ve come on holiday by mistake” (Withnail and I)

”Scorchio” every time it’s over 22 degrees (fast show)

“That’s not very Christmassy” every time someone is a bit grumpy in December (peep show)

I’m sure there’s more!

1AnotherOne · 14/12/2025 12:07

We are forever quoting Gavin and Stacey.

also The Royle Family ‘all I wanted was a christmas like Nigellas’ ‘do you want oblongs or triangles?’ ‘Christmas isn’t really for children is it?’

also Kath and Kim ‘it’s nice, it’s different it’s unusual’, ‘pack of chunts!’, ‘little baby Jesus Kim not cheeses’

NormasArse · 14/12/2025 12:15

Whoa there Lesley!

It’s getting a bit busy down here my love.

A pair of Val’s old knickers!

What’s occurring?

Today, I will be mostly…

In reply to what is that smell…. Woman, Stan.

Ijwwm · 14/12/2025 12:42

If asking if anyone wants something from the shop, the response will firstly be “cornetto” from Shaun of the Dead

DoreensLemonDrizzle · 14/12/2025 15:23

Thanks! These are brilliant.

My friend has a favourite chair and whenever anyone is sitting in it, she uses the “get outta ma pub!” line as it is next to where she keeps her wine!
