Anyone under 65 thinking of the flu jab

BlueberryOats · 12/12/2025 15:12

My local pharmacy had 6 under 65 jabs left today and doesn't know when they are getting any more in, so today is probably a good time!

They were going to phone people who had booked next week (me) to tell them to come in now.

Luckily, I figured it was going to be cancelled, as my covid jab was also cancelled today, so popped in.

Because just like the covid jabs it doesn't actually stop you getting it nor spreading it 🤷‍♂️

It very much does reduce the spread - that’s why there is a mass NHS programme to vaccinate children from age 2 right up to year 11, because research has shown that whilst they are far less likely to be seriously ill with it if they are less susceptible to it they don’t transmit it to the same level to more vulnerable people through the community:

Yes, i had mine a few weeks ago.

aintnospringchicken · 12/12/2025 17:13

I got mine at Superdrug in October.Paid half price because I had a Superdrug health and beauty card.
DH got his at the end of September on the NHS as he’s 65.
Glad we got them well before this awful outbreak of flu.

I had one in September. I pay to get one every year. Anything to give myself the best chance of avoiding flu

Miyagi99 · 12/12/2025 17:16

Yeah, I’ve been sent an appointment from our local hospital vaccination centre.

Thedogscollar · 12/12/2025 17:18

I got mine a few weeks ago and I'm glad I did as just been looking after a young Mum post cesarean with confirmed flu. Obvs got it through work, but I'm retiring next year and will happily pay for it.

hobbledyhoy · 12/12/2025 17:19

Yes but none available privately. Out of interest I checked the NHS appointments and if I was over 65 then I could have had an appointment within 3 hours, which is great but in my opinion seems a bit skewed when it seems to be disproportionately affecting younger age groups.

Christmaschristingle · 12/12/2025 17:22

@SalmonOnFinnCrisp and whose fault is that ?

Lots of people don't realise they can pay for one even the boots form starts off with lots of questions that sound like you can't get one unless over blah ,serious illness etc. until you get to the end and you see you can pay. They should just have an instant choice are you self funding ,yes go straight there

Even when we used to get it for free at work I paid for mine becusee they gave it so late.

Christmaschristingle · 12/12/2025 17:24

@Iocanepowder out of interest why does the age make the difference ? I've had it in my twenties

mimbleandlittlemy · 12/12/2025 17:26

Had it some weeks ago. Self-employed, going away at the start of January on a long planned big trip. Can't afford to get ill on either count.

TBH, being self-employed I get it every year. Being ill when I could do something to prevent being ill, or lessen the symptoms if ill, is a no-brainer especially for about £15.

beezlebubnicky · 12/12/2025 17:26

Had mine in October. Better to get one early as possible before peak of season - but if you didn't, next best time is now.

ADHDdiagnosis · 12/12/2025 17:29

Yes I just had one two days ago. It was last minute decision after some friends of mine told me how ill they’ve been with flu recently. And they are a young fit and healthy family I’m older and have health issues so I thought I’d get it.

Boots had none left but I found a local independent.

I have often had the vaccine over the years- and the covid one when available and I have never had any noticeable side effects. Today I have not managed to move from the sofa - totally lethargy and heaviness although I’m not feeling unwell. Im
wondering if now that I’m older it’s having more of an effect on my body. I’m very glad to have found a vaccine though because I don’t feel I could make it through another bad Illness right now.

Never had flu, and none of our friends have either. So we wouldn’t consider ourselves high risk atm.

My 5 year old had the vaccine but DC2 is too young so she hasn’t had it either.

ResusciAnnie · 12/12/2025 17:33

I’m 36 and had mine on the NHS back in October. No idea why tbh but the nurse was like ‘you’ve been offered it, take it!’. No brainer to me. Wish DH had made time to go get it, all the kids have been done through school and pharmacy (nursery age child).

joanofaardvark · 12/12/2025 17:35

I've been trying to get one in London, either private GP or pharmacy and there are no appointments anywhere.

Anotherdayattheforum · 12/12/2025 17:38

63 and prompted to get it due to news coverage last 24 hours.

I live alone with no reliable support network. Suddenly realised I would be very vulnerable if I became ill particularly over Christmas. Also zero hours contract.

Had flu 7 years ago over Christmas and very ill.

Had to shop around but done by 10:50. An interesting Christmas present to myself.

Will make sure I get it done by October next year.

Chinsupmeloves · 12/12/2025 17:43

I strive to every year as I take my Mum for hers anyway. Working in several schools and also being a carer it's worth it. Xx

Iheartmysmart · 12/12/2025 17:45

Nope, I’m late fifties but I live on my own, work from home and don’t have any school aged children. Nor do I use public transport so figure I’m pretty low risk. I’ve had flu twice, once in the summer of 1976 and again at new year in 1999. It was unpleasant but nothing a few days in bed didn’t put right.

frozendaisy · 12/12/2025 17:46

It takes 2 weeks after jab to be fully vaccinated
(yes whole house x2 adults x2 teens had it and adults paid for Covid as well)

Christmaschristingle · 12/12/2025 17:48

@Anotherdayattheforum I put a reminder to myself on my calender every sept

theladywiththelamp · 12/12/2025 17:50

By all means get the flu jab if you wish, but it isn’t a silver bullet which I sometimes worry some people think it is and don’t modify their lifestyle accordingly. For those who can’t get it, the best protection is still good hand hygiene, a good diet, adequate rest

and staying far away from diseasy fuckers who insist on coughing and spluttering all over the rest of us, the dirty animals

RosieLeaLovesTea · 12/12/2025 17:50

Yes me- I am 47 and I work in social
care.

Nourishinghandcream · 12/12/2025 17:51

I'm 60 and my OH is 57, we both had the jab back in late Oct.
No thinking about it.

HalfasleepChrisintheMorning · 12/12/2025 17:53

Had it 10th October. Now in bed with influenza a

bignewprinz · 12/12/2025 17:58

I haven't had the jab. Was terriblyill with flu (or maybe COVID) in Jan 25 and promised myself I would get both jabs this winter. Still haven't bothered! Que sera, sera.
