I wish people would stop mentioning my 5 foot 3 height like im an outlier.
I cannt believe I married my ex. I needed to be in a mental hospital not marched up the aisle.
I dont care if my child is clever or not.

@Maggiebell did you ever read any of the Skinhead series of books by Richard Allen?

MrsB2025 · 15/12/2025 07:52

Maggiebell · 15/12/2025 07:20

Who you calling a Wally?
First time I've been called middle class.
Im from south London and working class and was a girl skinhead in the early 70s when they were real skinheads not the plastic versions.
So you can get to fuck!

Sounds typical of my previous points about the kind of women that wanted to be seen to be shaming others for their choices. Pretending to be offended on behalf of people she doesn’t even understand. Skinhead isn’t an offensive reference 😂

TinselTina · 15/12/2025 09:05

OK back to the thread and not debating skin heads. I think xmas is nice but when people go on about the emotion of seeing children happy etc I dont get it. Yeah its nice but im not going to cry because my child believes in father xmas.

Sorry @TinselTinayou’re right.

MrsB2025 · 15/12/2025 09:34

I can’t stand Christmas weddings. It’s freezing, everyone’s broke, and everyone’s already stretched thin with festive plans. Of course, it’s lovely to celebrate the couple, I don’t mean to sound mean, I think it’s just a terrible time to have a wedding.

The religious aspect of Christmas ruins it 😳🫣

Do you know what the word means, and that there would be Christmas at all with no religion. Your post made me laugh out loud.

I'm shorter than you, can't remember it ever coming up . I'm already exhausted by Christmas still getting over flu, heard about a death in the family this morning not a person I get on with but I feel nothing towards it. It will most likely dampen Christmas for the family but I'm just completely indifferent to it and feel awful that I can't muster some feeling

To be fair, the Christians hijacked a much older winter celebration. Yule is the celebration of the winter solstice marking the shortest day and longest night, and the rebirth of the sun.

Ths is where we get the tradition of the yule log from.

Also, no-one really knows when a prophet called Jesus was born. Even the vicar at the church that I used to go to said that it was probably September.

I had three extended family funerals last Christmas and felt indifferent. I wasn't close to any of them. Of course it's sad for their immediate family. At my age, a lot of the time, it feels like just another funeral.

Yes it's all about religion. If you have holly and ivy, I take it you worship Saturn.

You’re wrong! Lough at all you like at @FluffyBox but her point is valid. Christians ‘acquired’ the festival from the Roman’s Saturnalia.

Saturnalia

Find out about Saturnalia, the Roman festival that inspired Christmas traditions we still continue today!

Yeah..its a hard one though. To stay on track with, I mean.

There are plenty of things I’d never admit out loud (I married purely for financial security, for instance)…but nothing related to Christmas specifically. I don’t like it much and don’t bother with it beyond having a nice meal, exchanging a few presents on Christmas Eve and a couple of days off doing housework but that’s not bad, is it?

Sorry I wasn’t alive then, but in all my years Christmas is a Christian festivity.

And your ott response made me cringe on your behalf!

I love many aspects of Christmas, but zero time for the religious elements. I’m sure many others feel the same judging by the number of likes and loves my post received.

The thing is, you’re probably right about what the bigger problem is.

I try very hard to be thoughtful and intentional in my gift buying, DD’s main gift is a plastic monstrosity this year but I got it second hand for that very reason. I’m typing this on a second hand phone because I never buy them new. I don’t like waste and I really do try to support local charities like the food bank and the one for vulnerable new mums - which is why I know that the ones near here anyway would absolutely be glad of this stuff. So to me, it seems madness to throw out stuff that others absolutely could make use of and just plain snobby to think that because it’s a cheaper brand nobody would want it.

That said, I’m 100% in agreement with the point that it’s the relentless commercialism and pressure to buy these things and swap essentially meaningless gifts that’s the issue. And I’m not above getting swept up in it, or resorting to sending via Amazon to those people I do buy for. I’d love to buy from lovely little independent local businesses but barely get time to dash round the supermarket for food most weeks, and particularly not in the run up to Christmas which is an insanely busy time at work. You’re right that what people do with the unwanted gifts is probably the least bit of the overall problem, but wrong in my opinion about the gifts not being good for anything other than the bin.

I’d love it if we could all collectively decide we’re going to prioritise time together and not buying and wrapping more and more stuff. Even in my ‘just buy for the children’ family - that’s still 16 children that I buy for, and 16 or more additional gifts for Dd who really doesn’t need them. She’s asked for the plastic monstrosity, but beyond that she wants a bouncy ball and a colouring book and I wish I had the courage of my convictions to just stick with that!

Have you thought @AliasGrape of getting a Fairphone? You can replace every part yourself, they try to make them observing human rights and they can be recycled

It's very easy to ignore any religious aspects, while enjoying Christmas as a time of goodwill, feasting and catching up with relatives etc.

For those of us of no religion (in the UK, slightly over half the population these days and rising) the religious aspects do indeed detract from the value of Christmas.

i want to wretch when i see my BIL
i quite like my MIL these days but BIL is
a twat. he brings nothing physically as gratitude for our feeding and watering him
and he brings nothing socially.if he wasn’t there i’m not sure we’d notice tbh!!
i love getting so drunk i can be a bit more frank with him but he still hasn’t got the hint after 18 years of spending xmas day with us!!

i don’t ever want to receive or give another present. what a waste!! what’s the point?!

Pistachiocake · 19/12/2025 00:30

5 3 is just about the average height for a woman (think it was either 5 4 for the UK or world, had it on a quiz) so seems weird someone would call that out, unless all your family are giants. Anyway, festive, I wish I could invite more of the people I know are alone and would like to come.

CrikeyMajikey · 19/12/2025 03:20

I don’t mind Christmas day but do mind that SIL brings awful desserts having stressed about them for days beforehand. This year I’ve put her on cheese, hopefully it be better all round. Also she and DH talk endlessly about their DF, this year I’m going to play Bingo in my head. I do actually enjoy her company, just a little done with Christmas day.

I think people sometimes just want something stupid to say then lol
