Tell me about Darts!

When did it become so loud and so popular!

About five years ago I’m remember it becoming more popular with groups of men wearing matching loud patterned suits.

but just watching it on sky and it’s crazy! Like a massive boozy fancy dress party!

how long has it been like this?

At least the last 15 years to this extreme, but it’s always been popular in our house, we don’t go, but as a family we always watch the World Darts over Christmas on tv. It helps to have new players like Luke Littler coming through, this brings more younger people watching.

Newlysinglemumma · 11/12/2025 21:34

I’m 31 and for as long as I can’t remember my parents would watch it throughout December it’s like one of Christmas traditions! They absolutely love it and get right into it and they have friends similar too!

TeapotCollection · 11/12/2025 21:41

Yes it’s been like this for a good few years but Luke Littler has definitely ramped it up

Massive boozy fancy dress party is a very good description 😆 we used to go to the Premier League which was great but we do exhibitions now. We pay for the top level of tickets and get to meet the players, we’ve met a lot of the big names

Been looking forward to The Worlds (as it’s known) for ages, we absolutely LOVE the darts

It's not Christmas until the darts starts.

This is only the first night, it gets better.

If you are amused by the loud shirts and antics, wait til Peter Wright plays (although he's not been at the top of his game for a while). Always good for an entrance though.

Hedgehogsaremyjam · 11/12/2025 22:14

Love love love the darts!!

One of the best bits about Christmas is having the darts on so much.

Great to have Wayne Mardle back this year as well.

Definitely make it a Christmas tradition OP you won't regret it

eggandonion · 11/12/2025 22:16

We discovered Christmas darts last year! Great entertainment.

hby9628 · 11/12/2025 22:16

I should really watch the darts. DH loves it. He said xmas has started now. Maybe I should show some interest

TeapotCollection · 11/12/2025 22:18

Agree about Wayne Mardle, we missed him last year - great to have him here again

TeapotCollection · 12/12/2025 06:29

hby9628 definitely give it a go, I agree with your husband - darts is the start of Christmas 🎄

hby9628 · 13/12/2025 17:03

@TeapotCollectionill give it a go tonight (is it on tonight??) he’s prepared by purchasing a lot of Guinness 🤣

Tutorpuzzle · 13/12/2025 17:16

You should definitely play as well. My parents were avid pub players in the seventies/eighties and I’ve got a board set up in the spare room. I go through phases of being absolutely obsessed!

(Feel I should add..keep kids and pets out, it didn’t bother my parents - it was the eighties - but blimey those darts can hare off in weird directions if you hit the metal - or spider, as it’s properly called).

mydogisanidiott · 13/12/2025 17:41

Husband has asked dartboard for Xmas! He still has one in his bedroom at his parents. He is 47!

@hby9628 on now 🎯 Paul Lim oldest player to play in The Worlds at 71 👏

Yes they can go anywhere if you have a bounce out but they’re a lot less likely now that the wires are much thinner

TeapotCollection · 13/12/2025 19:29

OP I hope you’ve got him a board 😃

Banditbiscuits · 13/12/2025 19:49

Love this time of year when the Darts is on. My dad played darts at a good level and got me into it so every Christmas it would be on in my house growing up. When I moved in with my.DH I got him in to it and now every year we watch as much as we can together and catch the other big events on TV when possible.

Funnywonder · 13/12/2025 19:54

Just reminded me of my late dad. He loved watching the darts. My mum hated it but passed the time by adding up the scores and shouting them out before they were announced. Much to my dad’s irritation🤣 Those were the days - just the one telly!

HereforonedayonlytoavoidStrangerThingsspoilers · 13/12/2025 20:16

I live very close to Ally Pally and I love seeing all the darts fans dressed up on their way to the venue. Every year we say we should get tickets to go! The atmosphere looks amazing on the telly.

ExquisiteDecor · 13/12/2025 20:23

We've been watching the PDC World Champs for about 25 years since the heyday of Phil Taylor and just love it. We went about three years ago and had a blast. DS and DH play in a league. Mind you the downside is that I can go entire Christmasses without seeing any of the traditional movies which I do miss a bit but I can't tear myself away from the darts.

Lim's done it!

TeapotCollection · 13/12/2025 20:52

Go Paul Lim 😃 wow, 29 years after his first appearance. Not many sports you can do that in
