At this time of year, it’s definitely Woolworths.
My DCs miss Wilkos (their version of Woolies)

Tammy girl, internacionale, Athena, Woolworths.

TheLightSideOfTheMoon · 11/12/2025 14:09

Growing up in Bath there was a shop called Eureka which sold incense, clothes and beautiful hand made homeware.

Another shop up the road was called Stone The Crows which sold some lovely items.

I also miss Wilkinsons. Lovely paint, lovely towels and fantastic for kitchen stuff.

GellerYeller · 11/12/2025 14:13

Wilko, definitely. Every time we need something random but usually essential, one of the DC will say ‘well you know who WOULD have sold that…’
Also the ethical Body Shop of the 80s, when the lip balms were kiwi and strawberry, the products were unique, there were affordable sizes of everything, refillable, AND their incredible perfume oil bar.
Topshop, Oasis and Warehouse. I know they’re online but it’s not the same.

Wallabyone · 11/12/2025 14:14

Morgan, Kookai, Topshop at Oxford Circus. Loved Woolworths! I used to go with my grandma every Saturday and be let loose on the pick and mix, then decant into her crystal lidded bowl when we got back to her house whilst she made us lunch #happysigh

Didshejustsaythatoutloud · 11/12/2025 14:16

Oh, i so miss Debenhams at Christmas, their perfume/aftershave prices were the best. I know they are online but i cannot forgive them.
And of course Woolies

Saylessy · 11/12/2025 14:18

LaSenza, Jane Norman this shop called Candy’s in Dagenham

SushiSheep · 11/12/2025 14:19

Getting out our Christmas decorations was what inspired this post.
So many of our lights (we have a LOT of lights!) are from Wilkos, and DC3 said we could do with another set of red berry lights for our outdoor tree, then said "Wilkos would've had them" - indeed, that's where the original set came from.
Good quality, good customer service and reasonable pricing <sigh!>

Lewis's department stores in Leeds and Birmingham. (They were not connected to JL, and in fact were much better).

shellyleppard · 11/12/2025 14:26

C and A, Woolworths, Wilkinsons....sigh. used to be a really lovely department store in my old home town.... always had the most beautiful Christmas grotto

SushiSheep · 11/12/2025 14:28

BHS was always lovely at Christmas too.
Many a time my sister and I would meet up and do our Christmas shopping there.

I used to work in the Lewis’s in Manchester when I was doing my post grad. Great memories.

Razzle dazzle

Old Times (is that the name? I used to get my mum all sorts of 'historical' shit from there. No clue if she liked it, I suspect the ancient Egyptian theme ball point pen was a gift giving low point for her. Anyway, i miss it for last minute panic purchases)

Past Times, it was always very Christmassy in there.

MiddlingMarch · 11/12/2025 15:35

Yes! Past times!

Ah, the edwardiana jewellery, the enormous nighties, the random and slightly.unhinged 'antique' designs. Poor mum, she hasn't had a mad, ugly notebook or strange figurine for her birthday in a good twenty years now.

Kookai WAS brilliant! I’ve still got a few things from there.
