How much effort do you make to look nice each day

As the tittle says really. I currently exclusively wfh, but normally I’d be in the office 2 days a week. I never wear make up if I’m wfh unless I have a really important external meeting. I also mainly wear smartish lounge wear, rather than smarter work type stuff. I do straighten my hair daily as it takes on a life of its own!

I popped out to drop something to a friend yesterday, she was wfh and looked so lovely and glam - I felt like a troll in my gym leggings and oversized jumper!

And now I’m wondering if I should start making more of an effort, would I feel better about myself? I do hate looking at myself on team, I look old and tired when bare faced. But can I be bothered?

Keen to know what others do day to day? Tips for quick make up too please!

On a scale of 1 - 10?

Zero. 😎

moneyadviceplease · 11/12/2025 20:16

Even on WFH days I make an effort. Hair done properly, lenses in, make up and proper clothes, can be jeans and a jumper but properly put together. I have never and will never wear leggings / joggers / pyjamas to work. It’s a psychological thing that if I am dressed for work my mind is in work mode

YorkshireGoldDrinker · 11/12/2025 20:23

I work in a co-working space once a fortnight (I hate it) and even then I don't do anything to look nice besides the bare minimum, ie hair washed, combed, dressed smart casual, maybe perfume, depends on my mood.

I've found over the years that any makeup except lipstick or lipbalm/Vaseline makes my eyes water. Foundation? My eyes sting. Eyeliner? (never on the waterline) My eyes sting. Eyeshadow? My eyes sting. So some lipbalm or a finger dipped in Vaseline and smeared across the lips to prevent chapping, or a nice brown lipstick if I'm feeling fancy.

You often don't need much to look nice. Just the basics; freshly washed, groomed, a bit of light preening, maybe some body spritz/perfume, all good to go.

PinkSparklyPussyCat · 11/12/2025 20:32

I have a shower and that's it whether I'm in the office or WFH. I haven't worn make up since I started my job a couple of months ago and the only difference with clothes is I wear leggings and t shirt at home and dress smarter in the office. I usually brush my hair but if it looks ok I leave it be

HoneyParsnipSoup · 11/12/2025 20:36

No. Zero point. I have 2 small children and a lively dog who needs tramping round fields twice a day. And all it’s done for weeks is rain, anything that isn’t tarmac is a bog.

I live in long sleeve T shirts, leggings and slipper socks int the house. Out of the house it’s the same but I add black rubber ankle boots and a raincoat.

Minimal make up or none at all. I know I’m not ‘making the best of myself’ but honestly I see mums at the school gates with their nails, eyelashes and tans done and wonder how they have the time or money to do it.

arethereanyleftatall · 11/12/2025 08:45

I brush my hair and put it in a pony.

and then I go.

me too! Same if I'm WFH or in the office.

dudsville · 11/12/2025 20:39

Ahhh, the pandemic sorted this for me. I found lovely clothes that look smart casual and are so comfortable. My hair is easy to style because I've really followed my hair type. My skin care regime has improved my skin and I only wear some foundation now. So every day I look the same now, no need for clothes I don't like it don't feel proud in.

landlordhell · 11/12/2025 20:40

I work in school every day and always ‘make an effort’ and on the weekend I still wear make up, style my hair, choose my clothes to look good even though it’s more casual. I like clothes and make up, I like to look my best. The only days I don’t get ready is if I’m off sick.

superbakedpotato · 11/12/2025 20:40

I tend to be in be in a jumper and leggings (sometimes pyjama bottoms lol!) I don't feel like wfh deserves the effort it takes to look "glam" and I'd rather be comfy. I may just put a bit of mascara and blush on if I know I'm gonna be in a lot of meetings that day, because I always look ghostly white on teams without any makeup.

Classfuse · 11/12/2025 20:48

I wfh and leave the house at least twice a day for the school run, and go out every weekend. I shower, shave, wear "outside" casual clothes (not leggings or joggers, but still comfy eg jeans), brush and tie up hair, brush teeth, put in contact lenses, wash face and apply light makeup. I wear small earrings which I never take out. I'd never go on a Teams call without makeup, I look awful without it. Most people might not realise I'm wearing makeup, it's not heavy but makes me look healthier. I never have eyelashes or nails done, that's not my thing.

Psychologically I like to have "at home" clothes which are joggers and fleece, and take my contacts out and put glasses on, but I wear them only in the evenings when I know I'm not going out again, and wouldn't wear them outdoors.

theunbreakablecleopatrajones · 11/12/2025 20:50

I get dressed..

I do wear a bit of makeup because I look like a bowl of porridge without it (unless tanned)

I often keep little hoop earrings in for weeks, but I wouldn't put jewellery on especially if WFH

I have naturally scruffy hair and I would like to be arsed with it, but I cannot.

MidnightMeltdown · 11/12/2025 21:10

I wear the same makeup as I would in the office as still meeting people on teams! 🤷🏻‍♀️

However, it takes me about 3 minutes to do my makeup. I only use 4 products - mascara, concealer, lipstick and blusher.

giveyourselfapresent · 11/12/2025 22:53

I wear makeup every day, just moisturiser, bit of C Tilbury illuminating stick, BB cream or Jones Rd WTF foundation (it's a love it or hate it product, I LOVE it), Westman Atelier blush stick, eyeliner and some powder. Sounds a lot but it's a natural look other than the eyeliner (and you can pry my dramatic eyeliner from my cold dead hands).

My hair is a bit rubbish but looks OK if clean and shoved in a messy clip or bun with the bits around my face straightened.

Clothes, I WFH and my usual uniform is plaid PJ bottoms (fresh, not slept in) with a nice chunky knit in wool or cashmere. I genuinely love plaid flannel bottoms and I feel good in them, not sloppy. I would never sit down to do work in my dressing gown. That DOES feel sloppy to me. I feel the same about the Oodie (I have one but don't like it much as I do feel huge and slobby in it).

It is about making myself feel good. I do the above makeup even if no video calls planned, even if it's Sunday and I'm not going anywhere. If I pass a mirror, I like to look nice. It makes me happy, simple as that.

The Teams filter is fantastic! And I noticed while waiting for my last call that they have make-up filters now too. I had a play around with them while I was waiting and they seemed quite good.

HopSpringsEternal · 11/12/2025 23:03

Ive never done much, my friends are all quite glam but Im not interested. Luckily I am dazzling company.
My BF and I have similar incomes and mortgages. We worked out that over the timemif our friendship (15 years and counting) she has spent 3000 a year ish on clothes, bags, make up, hair, nails, shoes, facials, creams, vitamins etc so £45,000! She looks gorgeous and enjoys it and makes her feel confident. I on the otherhand look fine. Not bad but don't really give a fuck.
I do love travel though and have been on many fabulous holidays and time wise I have more time somplay sport (slightly obsessed) and watch TV. she spends an hour making herself look beautiful instead.
Different strokes. Both of us happy, neither regret our choices.

Waitingfordoggo · 11/12/2025 23:31

None. Well I brush my teeth. Sometimes my hair too, though actually not often because it’s wavy on top with ringlets underneath and when brushed looks large and ridiculous. It’s in a ponytail 99% of the time. I shower in the evenings and wash my hair once a week. I don’t wear make up so my getting ready routine doesn’t take much time at all. I wear gym kit all day every day (work) and when I’m not in that, I’m wearing clothes with holes in to walk the dog. And then I’m in my PJs after that. I just don’t enjoy any sort of grooming stuff really- it’s all a chore to me, the same as doing the laundry or cleaning the kitchen floor. Although actually, thinking about it, I enjoy cleaning more than grooming.

MrsSkylerWhite · 11/12/2025 23:33

I bathe or shower, clean my teeth, brush my hair. That’s me done.

Jugendstiel · 11/12/2025 23:35

I WFH but I put on make up every day even if I am alone. I am very pale with very pale eyebrows and lashes, so if I don't, I look ill.

MsCactus · 12/12/2025 00:03

I do a lot - SPF everyday, concealer, blush, eyeshadow, eyeliner and mascara - even when WFH.

It actually looks fairly subtle, but I never go out really without makeup. At a minimum I'll wear my tinted SPF

Edited to add: and I really enjoy doing it!

Giraffehaver · 12/12/2025 00:05

None. Depressed, fat, anxious. OH doesn't notice so don't care

SouthernNights59 · 12/12/2025 00:35

I've never WFH so went into the office every day. I wore appropriate clothing, that's about it. I don't wear make up, and I have short wavy hair which I don't brush. Getting ready to go anywhere takes very little effort!

canuckup · 12/12/2025 02:13

I always brush hair, teeth, bit of make up on.

I'd always wear a top/nice sweater for WFH, never a hoodie for example. I wear leggings, but with a long shirt, poncho etc.

Firefumes · 12/12/2025 02:29

I work remotely and get ready as normal. Don’t you not leave the house? During my break or before/after work, I go to the gym, go on walks, grab coffee/lunch, meet friends. That’s the beauty of working from home, being able to map work life around your normal routine as opposed to orbiting your workplace.

So in the morning shower, moisturise body, full dental routine, wash face, skincare. Put light makeup on eg tinted moisturiser instead of foundation. I still wear concealer, cream blush/bronzer, then just brush my eyebrows & put on lip balm. I like looking polished for video calls, and ready if/when I leave the house.

For hair, I wash every 2-3 days. So on some mornings it’s a full wash/dry, other days just brushing it, or dry shampoo.

For outfits I tend to go smart on top, casual on bottom. Gym leggings, nice top and a blazer for example. I don’t wear purely casual stuff for WFH. Mainly as I like there to be a difference between what I wear at home/on weekends and what I wear during the work day, to differentiate my life. I don’t like WFH when all boundaries are blurred.

landlordhell · 12/12/2025 06:24

I’ve just woken up and can’t fathom how people don’t brush their hair. After sleeping your hair gets messed up on the pillow surely? It makes sense now as I see so many children come into school with their hair all over the place; they belong to the non groomers! 😂

Twilightstarbright · 12/12/2025 06:47

I wear make up every day unless I’m ill. Takes me about three minutes. I don’t tend to wear my hair up either.
