Don’t look if squeamish - need to have my toenail removed

What I thought was a fungal infection turns out to be a damaged nail plate from years of untreated ingrown nails and suffocation from poorly applied gel nails by moi.

Has anyone had their toenail removed? If so did it grow back healthy ? Did it really hurt afterwards ?!
Luckily my other big toenail can be saved but the left is too far gone. Oh I also have something called a granuloma under the nail plate which bled like a bitch at the podiatrist!

Not sure why you needed to include a picture?

I had a toenail removed and it was fine. It grew back a bit thicker it seemed at first but then evened out.

I zoomed in! 😂

I’ve never had one surgically removed, but a toenail once fell off after a long run. It didn’t hurt and grew back just fine.

PrizedPickledPopcorn · 11/12/2025 07:46

I assumed it would hurt like hell but DM had hers done and didn’t complain at all. And she would have 🤣

When my dad was a teenager he had to have his big toenail removed due to a sport injury . It never grew back , but that was a long time ago and probably the process has changed now .

I had my little toe nail drop off one day. Most surprising! Didn't hurt and grew back.

I’ve had both my big toenails taken off due to ingrown toenails. Neither grew back normal. Very hard and uneven. I’ve lots other toenails through sport trauma and there’s grown back fine.

Alltheusefulitems · 11/12/2025 08:08

@DinoLil The exact same thing happened to me a couple of months ago!!

StepAwayFromMyCrutches · 11/12/2025 08:14

It depends exactly what is damaged.

Mine have fallen off in the past, post long run damage and they have grown back fine.

But, I have one that has a damaged growth bed, the bit just behind the cuticle, from having a heavy object dropped on it. It never grows right.

I've had a damaged one removed.
It was so weird because the doctor just pulled it out.
It literally slid out from the base. I guess because it was bruised.
It didn't even hurt much.
Grew back fine.
