Been watching all the Morse, Lewis, Endeavour, Frost..etc series on ITV x recently, and i've spotted a few tropes they like to use, but there's a couple i'm really fed up of.

  1. The new love interest turning out to be the killer/bad guy

  2. Families of the dead refusing to answer perfectly reasonable questions/being hostile.

The police station will have a quirky young IT expert on its payroll, who is always happy and lighthearted. This is because they really REALLY love exploring complicated computer stuff, basically do it for fun, and they don't really engage with the murder at all except as an opportunity to do some barely legal hacking type stuff to help their colleagues.

If (due to cutbacks) the police station doesn't have a quirky young IT expert on its payroll, one of the detectives will have an autistic nephew who is a computing genius. Operating from their gaming-equipment-filled bedroom, they can find out anything at all from any secure network anywhere in the world.
