The "My landlord is selling up" thread

Morning all. Looking for others in this position to chat with.

After 10 years, my accidental landlord is selling. Nothing to do with new legislation, just because he's retiring and a mortgage free rental isn't the best return for his investments. He's been a great landlord and says I've been the best tenant he could have hoped for.

As rents have risen so much in the area, I can't afford another, so am currently under the local authority's homelessness team.

Very important that my son and I stay in this area due to our support network, both AuDHD with some support needs and non drivers. They've going to do what they can for us. Luckily, I live in a smaller town and lists aren't as long as in cities.

Please keep your fingers crossed for us, and happy to chat with those in a similar position!

Could you afford to buy it from the landlord? A hassle free sale for him and you don’t have to move.

Seeingadistance · 08/12/2025 14:49

Why are you referring to him as an accidental landlord?

Enterthewolves · 08/12/2025 14:51

Accidental landlord is how people who inherit a property/move into a partnership house etc refer to themselves - pisses me right off - being a landlord is ALWAYS a choice and has responsibilities attached that mean you should never think of it as an accident (burnt out former housing advisor..)

and I’m sorry @Ahsheeit its hard - I hope your authority find something suitable. Best of luck

No chance of being able to buy, or I would have done. He did give me first dibs!

Accidental, as he didn't plan to become a landlord, but both his partner and him owned property and he moved in with her.

He's been great and more than fulfilled his obligations, didn't increase the rent in all the time I've been here and set everything up clearly and above board with all safety checks fine like clockwork. Repairs done swiftly with no messing about. I understand his reasons for selling now.

Fingers crossed. I'm now in the "wait to see what comes up" period as everything has been done that needs doing.

Hi, @Ahsheeit

Was given notice today. Our current contract ends Feb and LL says they are willing to continue on a monthly rolling if we need more time to find a new place, plus offered us first look-in if we want to buy the house (we can’t and don’t).
Been here nearly 10yrs and there’s been a lot of compromise on both sides (we live in a property that needs drastic and extensive repairs/updates, landlord has kept the rent low compared to the skyrocketing rates of the area).
I can’t say this has come as a shock, but feeling very grey and numb after a brief look on rightmove, etc. Brief only because there were approx 25 houses/flats within our filters of price range and extended area.

Nothing useful to offer, just sympathy and crossed fingers for you and your son that something suitable comes up quick!

Hi! Have looked at a flat that which will work. Not ideal but okay. Location is great though. Putting the application in tomorrow. Fingers crossed.

I'm no longer stressing, will just control what I can.

How did it go? Smile

Hi! Would definitely work and have applied. Landlord isn't so good at responding to the letting agency though, so currently in limbo. 😵‍💫
