The cost of a stamp

I know I must have been living under a rock but I went to post my Christmas cards yesterday and I couldn't believe a first class stamp was £1.70!!!

I was expecting just over a £1. The lady in the post office said second class won't be guaranteed for Christmas now as it's taking up to 2 weeks where we are.

How long will the Royal Mail last at this rate?!

I thought last posting day for 2nd class was 17th.

I almost yelped when I was told £3.40 for airmail!

Prices are bizarre nowadays. I can get a kg of oatmeal which has been grown, processed, dried, packaged and shipped for 85p but a stamp is £1.70.

Makes 0 sense.

You only think that because there is a history of stamp costs…

If a new company said, I’ll put a drop off point within 1 mile of everyone’s house, that’s picked up 6 days a week, sorted, transported to any address in the UK and delivered 6 days per week to that persons home, for £1.70 an item, which is about 1/3 of a takeaway coffee, or a 4 Pinter of milk…. You’d think that’s not too bad really…

Royal Mail have huge numbers of staff so a huge hit on the national insurance hike in April and will be hit again in April when minimum wage increases, prices of fuel etc..

I appreciate why it has to go up, it just really shocked me! Especially when a second class is taking a few weeks. The post in the post office did say last posting day the 17th but she still advised otherwise. I know we don't get post daily now.

Oh gosh I agree. I couldn't believe the cost of posting my friend's card to Tenerife.
I was stood thinking how ridiculous when the cost of the post is so much greater than the value of the card itself.

JamesClyman · 07/12/2025 22:55

You get a letter delivered anywhere in the UK (including offshore islands) for £1.70.
I call it very reasonable.

Georgiepud · 07/12/2025 22:59

The last day for 2nd class is 17th.
I think the post office lady was trying to upsell there.
Time to cut the Christmas card list by at least a third.

I brought a first class stamp yesterday and was shocked at the cost too!
I had £1.50 loose change in my purse and had to use my card, £1.70 is ridiculous, thankfully I only need to send 1 card, an older lady at the counter before me brought a 3 books of second class and it was almost £30 madness

You'll be OK using second class stamps for Christmas cards as long as you post before the date stated by Royal Mail.

I buy stamps in bulk.

Our rural shop no longer stocks 1st class as noone bought them. Yet on the same vein, we still get post delivered on a sunday.
