semi light hearted

We are going to in-laws this coming weekend and they have decided we are going to have a take away. Everytime we do this it follows the same routine mil will announce she can’t possibly can’t eat a full portion so will share with fil food arrives they divide theirs between them and then both help themselves to everyone else’s meaning usually left with very little.
Or they will both or order a fish based dish leave some theirs to share proceed to help themselves self’s to mine wouldn’t be an issue but they are very aware I don’t eat fish so again left with a child’s size portion.

how do I say don’t eat my chosen dish without been rude

Can you not just order an extra portion of something or do one of those set meals if they are available?

JudgeBread · 07/12/2025 18:35

Absolutely fucking not.

I'm with Nessa and Smithy, if you want some of what I'm having you should've ordered some yourself.

I would say" are you eyeing up my bhunas?!"

fil did one comment how nice my dish was and I did say “yes it is that’s why I ordered it”

  1. Your DH says 'oi, mum! You can't nick @Needtofacereality's food!' or whatever version of that is socially acceptable in his family.

  2. You eat beforehand, order like mice, then you and DH tuck in to theirs.

  3. You order two dishes and when they arrive, pass one to MIL with a big smile. 'I know you're only going to help yourself to mine otherwise!'

Depends how passive aggressive you are feeling. But I would go for the DH saying something option. It's his mum.

“Before we order can I make it clear that my dish is just for me as I don’t like the dishes that you order and when you have a bit of everything, I’m left with a small portion!”
