Magnesium Glycinate side effects

Hi I've recently started taking a Magnesium Glycinate supplement from Boots to help with sleep. I was taking Nutrition Geeks 3 in 1 magnesium supplement but stopped it due to an upset stomach which is likely caused by the magnesium citrate.

The last few days since I started taking it I've experienced low mood, negative thoughts and anxiety. I've never heard that magneisum could cause this but I can't think of any other reason. I feel like I felt prior to starting HRT! I am going to stop it but just wondered if anyone else had experienced this?

I take the Boots one and my only side effect is a bit of indigestion. I don’t take it every day and that helps.

ShesTheAlbatross · 07/12/2025 19:41

I definitely read that that is a thing for some people.

I take the exact same supplement as you, OP, and haven’t had any such side effects. I did take a high dose of a different brand prior to this - just the glycinate, not the two others - and maybe I’d learnt to tolerate it? Perhaps you’ll adjust to it too?
DD also takes it and said it helps with her anxiety and restless legs.

If you’re sure it’s this causing the problem maybe try another brand with magnesium glycinate only.

Just been taking magnesium citrate for a week... slight help with sleep but so much pooping!! Just been reading that the citrate and oxide are laxatives.. for sleep issues you need glycinate!!

I have just started taking magnesium glycinate in the hope of improving sleep.
Can anyone tell me how long it was before you began to get any effect?

CandidLurker · 12/01/2026 09:10

I had to stop taking magnesium it as it upset my stomach. I’ve tried two brands including the nutrition geeks one. I also did have a depressive episode before Christmas, but I’ve had those frequently whilst not taking magnesium, so don’t think it’s linked. The digestive issues definitely were.

i read that it has the effect of drawing more water into your bowel.

I have tried several brands of magnesium glycinate. The Boots one is fine for my stomach.

Magnesium glycinate has been brilliant for me. It worked within a week. I’m more relaxed and interestingly it’s had a positive affect on my irritable bladder.

I took it for a week or so, and started having horrific nightmares. Stopped taking it and the nightmares stopped.

Make sure you use glycinate and not citrate and citrate will make you pee from your bum.

I use Nutrition Geeks 3 in 1 magnesium supplement. Just one tablet every evening, and it works a treat. I don't always sleep a full 8hrs, but I often get a good 6, which is a lot more than I was getting.

The Nutrition Geeks one contains Magnesium Citrate as well as glycinate which is why I couldn't take it. It gave me awful upset stomach.

Belladog1 how long were you taking it before noticing the beneficial effect on sleep?

Lemonade2011 · 12/01/2026 18:58

I got a 3 in one which made me feel really odd then took the well guard gylcinate which gave me tummy problems and I just didn’t feel ‘right’ despite sleeping better so gave up and now I’m shattered but feel better no tummy problems there must be one that helps that doesn’t cause issues as i really did enjoy sleeping better

Literally night one.

I tried a few different brands of magnesium for sleep, including a gel, and none of them made any difference to my sleep. I've been taking ashwagandha recently and it's helped a bit, it's quite good at stopping the early waking not so much at getting me to fall asleep in the first place.
