Emergency vet or not?

D cat has a strange lump on his head with something sticking out of it. It clearly hurts him so I haven’t been able to investigate thoroughly, but just this evening I’ve noticed a nasty smell coming from it. Is it vet tomorrow or wait until Monday? He seems quite well in himself.

vets tomorrow as sounds like infection and may need antibiotics .Cats are very good at hiding just how much something hurts,so better safe than sorry

Is it possible to go tomorrow? Your cat might need pain relief, there’s something in the lump, there’s a smell, could be infected.

P0loGirl · 07/12/2025 02:21

Yes I can take him tomorrow. I definitely think it’s infected, just wondered if it could wait until Monday.

@P0loGirl personally, if l was in your position, would take him tomorrow.Vet most probably give him pain relief and as @Mollymalone123 said, prescribe antibiotics, with an infection, the sooner the better.

Rolensausage · 07/12/2025 02:33

I’d take to vets tomorrow

@P0loGirl could you let us know what the vet says?
Hope it goes ok tomorrow🤞

I had this with one of mine. Didn’t realise until his whole face was suddenly swollen one day and I thought he’d been hit by a car. Straight to the vets who pulled on something small and hard (a scab) on his forehead, oh my god the pus and the smell. Revealed an abscess underneath. He had a sizeable hole in his head that they washed out with saline, gave him antibiotics and I cleaned the wound twice a day. He was right as rain afterwards. Now that you’ve noticed it do get it seen as soon as possible, it does need treating quickly to prevent further complications. If you can manage to touch the area, is it hard or like liquid under the skin?

LonelyPotato · 07/12/2025 02:50

Hope all goes well, I’ll join PPs in hoping it goes okay for you both Flowers

Cat has been admitted for a general anaesthetic to drain and treat a suspected abscess. Then in overnight for fluids and IV antibiotics. He was not a happy boy 😞
