Can I please ask you all, how you pronounce/say this?

Just after a little debate with a few people earlier today...

If you read that a certain thing is the 100th one - how do you pronounce '100th?'

Thank you.

Hund- redth

Sorry missed the poll 🫣

TheIncredibleBookEatingManchot · 06/12/2025 19:56

Usually "the hundredth one" but I might say "the one hundredth one" either for emphasis or to make sure no one misheard and thought I was talking about the two or three hundredth one.

Delphinium20 · 06/12/2025 19:58

I think I use both “the one hundredth” and “the hundredth”

thistimelastweek · 06/12/2025 19:59

One or two depending on context.
Identifying a number between 1 and 500 - option a.
Choosing between one hundred, two hundred, three hundred etc - option b

GrannyAchingsShepherdsHut · 06/12/2025 19:59

I don't actually know. My immediate reaction was one hundredth, bur I'm not actually sure.

I maybe feel like I'd use hundredth as a a synonym for 'loads' - I've done it a hundred times - vs I've done it one hundred times being actually 100.

As others have said, usually ‘the hundredth one’, but in some contexts ‘the one hundredth one’.

Never ‘a hundredth’ - that’s 0.01

Ved · 06/12/2025 20:52

Thanks all. Smile

Why I wondered/asked was because I heard someone say today - 'first there was the ninety-ninth one, then we had the 'a hundredth' one.'

I was like 'wut?' 😆

Surely it's the hundredth one - or maybe 'the ONE hundredth one.' (I don't say this, but that still sounds OK.)

The 'a hundredth' one sounded batshit (to me.)

Glad to see that very few people would say that. 😆 (87% of nearly 180 people so far, say 'the hundredth.')

I’d say ‘the hundredth’ or ‘the one hundredth’. The ‘one’ afterwards seems superfluous to me in both cases.

DarkEyedSailor · 06/12/2025 20:58

Hundred always looks so peculiar written down.

So the issue is with 'a' rather than 'the'

Hundredth isn't actually the issue.

Really sorry if I've missed the point here.

Gettingbysomehow · 06/12/2025 21:04

A hundredphthhhhh, I need braces, I can't say it.

CombatBarbie · 06/12/2025 21:09

Ok it doesn't even look like a word now

Nameinspirationneeded · 06/12/2025 21:10

I’m confused (not hard) can you give me a sentence when it might be used.

Think some people say ‘ninety-eight, ninety-nine, a hundred’ and then retain that ‘a’ when using ‘hundred’ in other contexts like ‘It was the a hundredth anniversary of his death’.

Pollyanna87 · 06/12/2025 21:21

One hundredth

Yeah pretty much that. And no you haven't missed the point. Smile I was just seeing how many - if anyone - would say it's the 'a hundredth.'

And I agree with a pp, that the word hundredth looks weirder every time you look at it. 😆

Ummm, OK...

It wasn't the ninety ninth time I tried, it was the 'a hundredth.' 😃

Nameinspirationneeded · 06/12/2025 22:48

Thanks for the example
for me It wasn't the ninety ninth time I tried, it was the hundredth (no “one” before or after.)
I’d probably be using a different word or feel it was implied - hundredth time, hundredth go, hundredth goal…

I think would only ever use one hundredth if it was one hundredth anniversary.

i do use a for counting - ninely eight, ninety nine, a hundredth

Onefortheroad25 · 06/12/2025 22:55

The hundredth.
Like..Sasha asked me if she could get Snapchat for the hundredth time! I said no.
