Sat at a retail park. Been shopping and noticed the car beside me has the boot part open like it’s not closed properly
back from shopping and it’s still open with stuff inside on view
can’t ask anyone as no security and they could be in any shop!

Nope, I'd be worried that it would set the alarm off and everyone would think I was nicking the stuff! Bet security would appear then!

There is no security at all - it’s basically a collection of shops and a giant carpark so not an indoor one
argh. Don’t want their stuff getting stolen….

I would. And then angst about whether they had left it open on purpose for some reason!

purplecorkheart · 05/12/2025 14:06

I probably wouldn't. I would worry that it was done on purpose. I might try and make it look less open though

Petesanker · 05/12/2025 14:08

No, I wouldn't touch someone else's car. If stuff gets nicked they'll learn to be more careful next time.

LamettaTime · 05/12/2025 14:08

I’d do it as I left - wouldn’t want to be sitting there listening to the alarm if I was waiting for someone.

ImThePr0blem · 05/12/2025 14:08

I’d leave it, let them learn to be responsible.

Velveletteslonleylonelygirlami · 05/12/2025 14:10

I'd shut it,nobody leaves a boot open full of expensive goods on purpose.

TheHungryHungryLandsharks · 05/12/2025 14:11

Definitely not. If it's got an automatic tailgate and you fuck it up - or try and force it closed - that's about £1K worth of damage you've done (speaking from experience!!!).

I'd imagine it's an automatic tailgate, it hasn't closed properly for whatever reason and has bounced open again. Most automatic tailgates can't be closed unless the keys are nearby. The only option in that case is using brute force, and I absolutely do not recommend using brute force for the reasons above.

BadgernTheGarden · 05/12/2025 14:13

Perhaps it's faulty and once locked you can't open it. There may be a good reason it's not locked, or it may be accidental.

I think that’s what it is (I work with cars) and the expensive) pram in the boot has stopped it from closing and it’s come back open
will give it another 10 mins while I drink my coffee!

I’m pretty sure it’s accidental, there’s an expensive pram and a load of shopping in the boot otherwise I would have ignored it!

When I had DC1 I left my boot wide open after getting her pushchair out. I came back to the car and it was still open and nobody had taken anything thankfully (not like there was anything to take!) I never did it again but always wondered why nobody thought to close it for me!

Florencesndzebedee · 05/12/2025 16:16

I’d be inclined to gently tap it shut.

I ended up trying to shut it very gently but as a PP said, it was well and truly not closing so no option but to leave it open
hopefully the stuff was ok

I never took in to consideration of the automatic close, definitely wouldn't want to cause a grand of damage.
